4/11/10: 2010 Opening Day Recap
A beautiful day of baseball, probably the best Opening Day weather in the history of the league, allowed for some exciting baseball contests throughout the MVABL.
The first final of the afternoon came as the Astros avenged their 2009 Opening Day loss to the Rangers by knocking off the defending champs 7-2. Reigning Cy Young winner Shawn Haffner racked up 7 Ks in relief to pick up the win, with the help of a pair of doubles from Tony Duncan. Jonathan Silverman was the hard luck loser for the Rangers despite striking out 11 in 7 innings of work.
The Thunder won a barnburner over the Indians 14-12 as both teams were bit with the injury bug. None more frightening that Indians star pitcher Matt Spradlin, who while playing left field, bloodied up his nose in a collision in the outfield. Drew York and David Moss homered for the Thunder, who are now 2-0 in Opening Day games.
The Dragons found the win column early this season, knocking off the Shockers 12-11. Brian Bay picked up the win in relief and Scott Jones registered the save for the Dragons. Thomas Fluty went yard for the Shockers.
The Slammmers gave the Redlegs a rude introduction into the MVABL as rookie Sean Casey mowed down 17 batters en route to a 4-1 victory at Preble Shawnee. Brad Clark struck out 10 for the Redlegs and suffered the loss.
The Royals also made the expansion teams 0-for-2 on the day as they made quick work of the Cardinals by a score of 15-0 in five innings. Jason Holmberg picked up the win for the Royals.
