Mariners get Revenge on
Rangers, 18-6
The Dayton Rangers didn’t look like the same team that beat the
Ohio Mariners 22-10 on Opening Day. The Mariners got their revenge, beating the
Rangers 18-6 in 7 innings on Sunday, June 5 at Xenia high school.
Ben Schubert got his first start on the mound since high school,
and unfortunately, a few errors and five free passes in the first couple of
innings put the Rangers in an early 12-0 hole. Gregg Foster launched a grand
slam home run in the first inning for the Mariners. Rangers right fielder
Josh Cawein homered in the top of the fourth to keep
the Rangers from being shut out. But the Mariners added three more runs in the
bottom of the inning to make it a 15-1 game.
Joe Staten hit a grand slam of his own in the top of the fifth, his
fourth home run of the season. Shawn Schmitt drove in a run with an RBI fielder’s
choice in the sixth, and the Mariners’ Gabe Thomas hit a 3-run HR in the bottom
of the sixth to round out the scoring.
Offensive highlights: Joe Staten 1-for-4, HR, 4RBI; Ben
Schubert 1-for-3, triple; Josh Cawein 1-for-2, 2
runs, RBI, HR; James Robinson 1-for-2, BB, run; Zach Carroll 1-for-2, BB, SB.
Historical Notes: James Robinson is 3 runs shy of
100 in the league. Aaron Armstrong needs 2 more runs scored to reach 100 in the
league.
