6/19/11: June 13-19 Recaps

JUNE 16 RECAP
Sox/Mariners an instant classic

The Beavercreek Sox knocked off the Ohio Mariners 5-3 in 8 innings on Thursday night in a battle for the top spot in the Buckeye Division.
The Sox got an unearned run in the first before the Mariners went up 2-1 on a 2-run double by Jacob Cooke in the bottom of the second. It stayed that way until top of the sixth when a Mariner error allowed a run with 2 outs to tie things at 2.
The game ended in regulation tied 2-2. Mariner's righty Matt Klaus was dominant for 7 innings, allowing no earned runs while striking out 11. Mariners' relief pitching put forth four free passes in the extra frame, allowing the Sox's Ryan Pearson to deliver a key double to put the Sox up 5-2. A Chris Ranstead RBI single in the bottom of the 8th was not enough as the Sox held on for the win.

JUNE 19 RECAPS
A's/Fusion combine to strikeout 44 batters

With late rain playing havoc on most players' Father's Day agendas, two MVABL games snuck in, and they were good ones. At Oak Grove in Centerville, the Slammers squeaked past the Mariners 9-7 in 7 innings, before Mother Nature intervened in the 8th to make the game final. Despite being on the losing end, Mariners' coach Tim Sullivan returned from his son's bachelor's party on Sunday just in time to launch his first homerun of the season. At Fairborn, the A's and Fusion were deadlocked at 3-3 after regulation. The Fusion took a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the 10th before Kyle Combs hit a two-run HR (his fifth of the year) to tie the game and keep the extra frames rolling. The Athletics finally came out on top in the bottom of the 12th, as a bases-loaded walk secured the win for Fairborn.
