Rangers Knock Off Indians
11-3
Sunday morning’s muggy affair saw the
visiting Dayton Rangers finally defeat the Springfield Indians for the first
time this season. The Rangers scored at least one run in each of the team’s
first seven innings en route to an 11-3 victory.
Jacob Robinson started on the hill for the Rangers
for the first time since May 27th. Jake struck out five and gave up
one earned run on the way to his second complete game of the year, and his
eighth of his career.
The Rangers scored first with the help of three
Indians errors in the top of the first inning. After Indians starter Phil Beach
balked in the second run in the next frame, Jelani Arnold roped a base hit to
left to plate another run. The Indians answered with one run in the bottom of
the second inning as Matt Spradlin led off with a single and came around to
score on a botched double play attempt.
The third inning started off with three straight
hits from Joe Staten, Clint Wolf, and Jonmarc Lippincott. Lippincott’s bloop
single scored Staten. Reis Pearson followed with a sac fly, and Brad Clark
doubled for the second time in as many at-bats to plate the third run of the
inning.
Joe Staten doubled in a run in the fourth to give
the Rangers a 7-1 advantage. The Indians’ Derek Nichols singled in Spradlin in
the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to five.
Matt Spradlin relieved
Beach on the mound to start the fifth inning. Third baseman James Robinson
doubled in Reis Pearson and Jelani Arnold singled in Robinson for a 9-2 Rangers
lead. Clint Wolf led off the sixth with a monstrous blast to straight away
centerfield for his second homerun of the season, tying him for third place all
time in career homeruns with 19. Spradlin would settle down at the point and
hold the Rangers to just two more hits (doubles by Robinson and Matt Hood) over
the next four innings. The Indians would tap in for their final tally in the
bottom of the sixth as a Rangers’ fielding miscue would result in a run.
Offensive performances of
note: Brad Clark 2-for-5 two doubles (8
on season); James Robinson 3-for-4 two doubles; Clint Wolf 2-for-5 HR 2 runs (29
on season); Jacob Robinson 3 runs scored; Joe Staten 2-for-4 RBI double; Jelani
Arnold 2-for-5 2RBIs.
Defensive performances of
note: Shane Fallen threw out his 8th runner attempting to steal,
which is a new Rangers record for a single season.
