Playoff Recaps for Thursday August 25th, 2005:
"Woodpeckers Defeat Angels 10-2"
Player of the game: Justin Newlen - Angels
Angels - In a stunning upset, the 21-0 Ohio Woodpeckers came back from a 2-0 deficit after 2 innings, scoring 10 runs starting in the third to win the semi-final of the winners bracket against the 11-10 Dayton Angels, whose bats were on valium after the first inning. Manager Tom Thygerson, who was in obvious need of a good dose of valium himself, was seen licking the bats in an effort to calm down, but to no avail. Witnesses say they actually saw steam coming out of his ears for the majority of the game and well afterwards. Player of the game...... Justin Newlen..... 3 highlight reel plays in centerfield.
"Outlaws Win Streak Hits 4, Defeat Royals 6-5"
Player of the game: Jason Griffith - Royals
Royals - On Thursday night the Royals faced off against the Outlaws in a must win game for both teams. The Royals came into the game short 2 of their big sticks, and the Outlaws came with more guys than they have had all season. The game started out quick for the Royals as they were able to post 2 quick runs as Dean and Errett scored on Franklin and Griffith singles. But on the night scoring would be few and far between for the Royals. The Outlaws cut the lead to 1 in the bottom of the 3rd when Freddy scored on a sharp single to left. In the top of the 4th the Royals answered with 1 of their own when Tim "Major" Payne laced a single up the box to score Jameson. However unphased, the Outlaws answered as a leadoff walk would reach third on an errant pickoff move and scoring on a sharp hit grounder to third. The score would remain 3-2 as both teams went 3-up/3-down in the 5th and 6th innings. In the 7th the Royals would notch their 4th run of the game when Franklin scored after a pair of singles from Errett and Griffith. With the 2 run lead, Royals starting pitcher Phil Beach sat the Outlaws down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 7th. Riding that momentum the Royals would tack on what they believed would be the insurance run they would need when Payne scored on a sharply hit ball down the line off the bat of Chad Campbell. But that's where it ended... In the bottom of the 8th the Outlaws would strike. After a single and a pair of walks loaded the bases the skipper made the call to bring in the "Major" to try and close the game out. However the first batter faced knocked a 2-RBI single to center cutting the Royal lead 5-4. The Outlaws next batter would tie the game scoring Kevin from third with another single. Then the Outlaws took the lead off yet another single off the bat of Doug "Royals sub" Schomer. As the Royals took the plate in the top of the ninth down 6-5, they couldn't have been in better position to strike back with their 2-3-4 hitters due up. However it was not to be their night, and after only 6 pitches the game was over.
Playoff Recaps for Tuesday August 23rd, 2005:
"Woodpeckers Defeat Royals 23-3"
Player of the game: Erik Riley - Woodpeckers / TJ Dean - Royals
Woodpeckers - Leadoff hitter Erik Riley goes 5-5 (2B,2 3B,BB,5 RBI,4 R) to lead the Peckers over the Royals in the second round of the MVABL playoffs. Chris Ranstead, Ben Ramsey, Billy Back, Joe Baillie, Scott Jones all added 3 hits each. Ranstead and Ramsey both hit a homerun. Matt Klaus picks up the win going 5 innings allowing 1 run while striking out 6 batters. Dave Pearson went 3 innings striking out 5 batters and allowed 1 earned run. Billy Back pitched the 9th recording and strike out and didn't allow a hit.
"Angels Over Astros 6-3"
Player of the game: Bob Overbeek - Angels
Angels - The Astros jumped out to a 2 run lead by the third inning and the Angels hitters sent only 16 batters to the plate in the first five innings before finally getting to the Astros outstanding starter with 4 runs in the sixth. The Astros got one back in the bottom of the 6th to make it 4-3, but that was all Angels starter Bob Overbeek would allow, getting stronger as the game progressed. The Angels scored 2 more in the 7th to finish the scoring with a 6-3 win. Player of the game; Bob Overbeek, 9 Innings complete, 3 runs allowed, 3 hits, 11 Ks.
"Outlaws Double Up Rangers 8-4"
Player of the game: Mike Ivers - Outlaws / Jonmarc Lippincott - Rangers
Rangers - Recap
Playoff Recaps for Sunday August 21st, 2005:
"Angels Blank Outlaws 21-0"
Player of the game: Amadeus Carter - Angels
Angels - The Outlaws had the misfortune of awakening the "sleeping giant" Angels in the first round of the playoffs and paid the price of the Angels last 4 frustrating losses being loosed on their pitching staff. Pitches that would have prompted routine ground balls were greeted by ballistic missile shots off the Angels bats that were nearly impossible to field when they were hit anywhere near the Outlaws defenders. Starting pitcher Amadeus Carter meanwhile pitched a shut-out 7 innings, giving up only one hit and racking up 12 K's, before the Outlaws had seen enough and threw in the towel. Manager Tommy Thygerson remarked "I've seen this coming for weeks now. We had the right players in the right place at the right time and they got the job done. Any team in this league would have had a rough day against us today." PLAYERS OF THE GAME: AMADEUS CARTER, 7 IP (complete), 12 K, 1 HIT, NO RUNS................. JEFF DILLARD, 3-5, 1B, 2B, 3B, 4RBI........... JEREMY CUNNINGHAM, 3-5, 3RBI BASE CLEARING DOUBLE, 2 1B........... GREG PERKINS, 3-5, 3 RBI, 3 1B......... DOUG ROSTER, 3-5, 3 1B.
"Royals Win Slugfest 22-18"
Players of the game: Nathan Schwab/Jason Griffith - Royals, Joe Staten/Jonmarc Lippincott - Rangers
Royals - The Royals and Rangers took the field Sunday night in their first game of the 2005 Playoffs, but what neither team knew was they were about to be a part of a roller-coaster of a game... The Rangers fresh off a 40 run cumulative scoring game hoped they could not have to do the same against the Royals. In the top of the first the Rangers plated the first 2 runs of the game, but were quickly matched in the bottom off a Griffith 2B and Beach 1B plated Schwab and Runyon to knot the match at 2. In the top of the second runs continued to flow past the plate like a leaky faucet as the Rangers put another 2 spot on the scoreboard. But in the bottom of the 2nd the Royals saw the Rangers double and raised it 2 with the help of a Griffith HR. Up 6-4 the flood gates opened for the Royals offense as they took the plate in the bottom of the third (down 7-6) and sent 13 batters to the plate scoring 8 runs. Up 14-7, the offense on both teams sputtered out over the middle part of the game, but as both the Royals and Rangers notched a few here and there the Royals went for the Rangers jugular in the 8th. Once again sending 12 hitters to the plate the Royals racked up an additional 6 runs to end the 8th up 22-13. Settling in on their 9 run lead the Royals let a few balls slip by here and there as the Rangers were able to bring the 9 run deficit down to 4, Griffith decided to close out the game himself fanning the Rangers final batter on 3 straight strikes ending the game and advancing the Royals onto the second round of the playoffs. So for the Rangers a second game in 3 days were 40 runs crossed the plate, but this time it was not in their favor as the Royals took the game by a final of 22-18.

Recaps for Thursday August 18th, 2005:
"Woodpeckers Comeback to Defeat Angels 12-3"
Player of the game: Greg Perkins - Angels
Angels - The Angels continued their losing ways as they head into the tournament losing to the league powerhouse, Woodpeckers. Both teams were a little undermanned with only 10 players showing up. The Angels started the game with a bang, scoring 3 runs in the first led by doubles by Jeff Dillard and Greg Stallard. Crafty lefty, Scott Falkowski took the hill for the Angels and just tried to mix it up and not give any good looks to the Woodpecker hitters. Scott ended up pitching 4 innings giving up 3 runs, 1 earned, off of 5 hits and 1 walk. The Angels wasted many opportunities in the first 3 innings leaving 2 runners on in each of the second and third innings. In the fifth the Woodpeckers brought out the sticks, scoring 6 runs off of 4 hits off reliever Greg Stallard. They ended up scoring 3 more in the sixth to put the game away. The Angels never came close to scoring again. The loss drops the Angels into 3rd place setting up a Sunday game for the Tournament. Key stats: Greg Stallard (1-1, 2B, 2 BB, 1 RBI), Scott Falkowski (4 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 1 BB).
Recaps for Sunday August 14th, 2005:
"Royals/Astros Split DH"
Players of the game: Nathan Schwab/Jason Griffith - Royals
Royals - The Royals took the field for their early morning match-up against the 4th place Dayton Astros. Trying to keep the momentum after their 7-4 win over the Angels the previous Sunday Phil Beach took the mound to keep the ball rolling. In the shortened game both teams knew that they would need to score early to put the pressure on, and that's just what the Astros did. When the dust cleared the Astros were up 3-1 after the first, but Royals bounced back with some patient ABs in the second. The Royals were able to plate 4 in the bottom of the 2nd. Schwab and Runyon plated another 2 in the bottom of the fourth... That would be all the runs the Royals would score, but it would prove to be just enough. Trying to close out the complete game Beach took the hill in the top of the 6th. The Astros made it interesting plating 2 in the top of the 6th, and with 2 outs and 2 on the skipper called on #45 to close out the game. Griffith did just that, striking out the final Astros batter and preserving the W for Beach. All Royals tallied 1 hit on the day except Franklin, Pennington, Runyon, and Griffith, however 95% of the Royals did reach base over the course of the game.
The Astros and Royals took the field after their mid-game cookout graciously provided by Mr. & Mrs. Dean. The Royals were able to plate a run in the top of the first, but once again the Astros answered back off a Louis 2B to the fence plated a run to knot the matchup at 1-1. The Astros then took the lead after Louis powered a low inside slider over the left center fence for a 2 run shot. Down 1-3, the Royals took the plate in the top of the 5th. A couple miscues in the Astros infield allowed the Royals to plate their 2nd run, but in the bottom, a well placed double plated 2 more for the Astros and that would prove to be the difference. At the end of 6, the Royals were down 6-4 looking to keep the game alive. Griffith led off with his 4th single on the day and Haver later reached base with 2 outs, but they were left stranded as the Astros relief froze the Royals batter ending the match-up, Royals down 4-6.
Recaps for Thursday August 11th, 2005:
"Sox Beat Knights 7-5"
Players of the game: Chris McCaslin - Sox
Sox - The Sox pounded out 12 hits over the game and took an early lead only to have the Knights come back in the 3rd inning and go up 4-3. The Sox were able to take the lead and keep it the rest of the game in the 4th. Everyone in the lineup produced at least one hit, but the team was led by Chris McCaslin 2-3 (1-2b), Ryan Houghson (2-4), and Christian Koenig (2-4). We had a good summer and good luck to all of my Sox players heading back to school.
Recaps for Tuesday August 9th, 2005:
"Rangers Defeat Angels 2-1"
Players of the game: Jacob Robinson - Rangers/Greg Perkins - Angels
Angels - The Angels tried to mix things up a little and use a pitching committee against the Rangers. It seemed to work when you look at the stat sheet (7 IP, 4 H, 4 BB, 2 HBP, 2 runs). The combination of Jeremy Cunningham, Scott Falkowski and Greg Perkins kept the Rangers hitters quiet for the majority of the game. 3 of there four singles came in the first to score their 2 runs. Normally in the MVABL, when you give only 2 runs you can expect a victory, but not this time. The Rangers did one better and held the Angels to only a homerun by Greg Perkins. The Angels did have 4 other hits throughout the game but they amounted to nothing. With one game left, the Angels must find a way to wake the bats up before the tournament or they will be going home early.
Rangers - Recap.
Recaps for Sunday August 7th, 2005:
"Royals Over Angels 7-4"
Players of the game: Eric Jameson - Royals
Royals - Heading into the final week and a half of the season the Royals took the field hoping to finish strong for the playoff seeding. After a pair of losses to the league-leading Woodpeckers, the Royals faced off against the second place Angels. Eric Jameson started on the mound for the Royals and was able to give them 6 strong innings. The 11 total runs were all scored over the first 3 innings of the game. The Angels were able to nickel and dime Jameson for their 4 runs, whereas the Royals down 4-3 in the bottom of the third, were able to plate 4 off a pair of doubles by Beach and Jameson, and were able to plate another 2 runs off some Angels miscues in the outfield. That was all the Royals needed as they settled down and played solid defense with some solid pitching. Over the final 6 innings the Royals pitching (Jameson and Payne) were able to hold the Angels to 2 hits. The Royals were able to squeeze a much needed victory over the 2nd place Angels with a tally of 7-4. On the day the Royals put a lot of balls in play and it really paid off. Special thanks go out to Doug from the Outlaws for hanging around to play innings 15-23 on the day for him, and helping the Royals out on a day where a few were missing due to prior engagements. At the plate Eric Jameson (2-3, 1 2B, 1 run, 1 RBI, 1 BB), Phil Beach (2-4, 2 2B, 1 run, 1 RBI), and TJ Dean (2-4, 2 runs, 1 RBI) all tallied multiple hits.
"Astros/Outlaws Split"
Players of the game: Brian Girard/Mike Leach - Astros
Astros - Game 1 - Brian Girard Picthed a Complete Game allowing just two earned runs while striking out 7 for the Stros on his way to the Victory. Brian also lead the offense going 2 for 3. Final Score 6-3.
Game 2 - Mike Leach pitched a complete game allowing just 4 earned runs. But costly Astro errors combined with poor Astro hitting lead to a 7-5 defeat. Vince Terek was 2 for 3 to lead the Offense.
Recap for Wednesday August 3rd, 2005:
"Woodpeckers Shutdown Sox 11-0"
Players of the game: Chris Abshear - Woodpeckers
Woodpeckers - The Ohio Woodpeckers sweep the season series from the Beavercreek Sox's with a shutout 11-0. The Peckers jumped out early on starter Nathan Kopp scoring 8 runs in the first. The entire lineup reached base safely before recording an out. The visitors collected 5 2B's, 3B, and 2BB leading to the 8 run first inning. Kopp gained control after that, striking out the next 4 batters and completed the game only allowing 3 more runs. Offensive leaders for the Woodpeckers were Chris Abshear 2-3 (2 2B,2R,RBI), Mike Siegman 2-3 (2B), Brad Thoma 2-4 (3B,2R,RBI), Ben Ramsey (2B,R,RBI), Brent Hausfeld 2-3 (2B,R). Three pitchers combined for the shutout. Billy Back picked up the win going 3 strong innings (5 K's), Tellkamp Jr. 2 innings (2 K's), and Greg Spanel 2 innings (3 K's).
Recap for Tuesday August 2nd, 2005:
"Knights Defeat Angels 4-2"
Players of the game: Marty Cox - Angels
Angels - The Angels started the game like most others bringing out the sticks in the first inning, but left 2 baserunners, scoring only 1 with singles by Jeff Dillard, Bob Overbeek and Chris Rock. Pitcher Greg Stallard looked sharp in the first inning, striking out 2, but seemed to lose his control over the next couple of innings. The Knights scored 3 runs in the next 2 innings off of 5 walks and 2 hits. That is all they would need though as the Angels’ hitters just couldn’t figure out Knights’ pitcher Josh Jaynes, collecting only 3 more hits the rest of the games, 2 of which by Marty Cox.
Recaps for Sunday July 31st, 2005:
"Astros Split DH with Sox"
Players of the game: Gregg Foster/Mike Leach - Astros
Astros - Game 1
The Astros started out strong scoring 3 in the top of the first. But The sox plated two unearned runs in the bottom of the first to cut into the early lead. Both teams added another run in the 4th to make the score 4-3 Stros. After the Astros tacked on two more in the top of the 5th to make the score 6-3, The sox came roaring back scoring 4 in the bottom of the 5th to take a 7-6 lead. The Astros then battled back scoring a run in the top of the 6th to tie the game at 7-7. It remained 7-7 into extra innings when the Sox got a one out triple and a walk off single to win game one 8-7. Brian Girard Pitched 8 innings allowing just 4 earned runs in defeat. Gregg Foster lead the Offense going 2-3 with a triple and 2 RBIs.
Game 2
Game 2 started much like game one as the Astros had a 1 run lead after the 1st with a 2-1 score. Both teams added a run in the 3rd to make the score 3-2 Astros. The big inning for the Stros came in the 4th when Mike Leach's inside the park Grand Slam helped the Astros to a 5 run inning and an 8-2 lead. The Stros would add two more runs and the Sox got two in the 5th and 2 in the 7th for a final score 10-6 Astros. Jason "Slim" Ingram Picked up the win in his Astro Debut picthing 4 solid innings allowing just 2 earned runs. Mike Leach lead the offense going 3 for 4 with a HR 4 RBIs and 4 runs scored.
"Woodpeckers Take Two from Royals, 6-4, 5-1"
Players of the game: Phil Beach/Tim Payne - Royals
Royals - The Royals took the field for game one on a beautiful day for baseball. This was the Royals first meeting with the league leading woodpeckers, but they took the field hoping to notch that first loss for them. Phil Beach started on the hill for the Royals and held the woodpeckers in check through 3 strong innings. The woodpeckers scored early off of a couple Royals errors, but in the 3rd inning the Royals got them back. The Royals were able to get the bases loaded off a Schwab single and Griffith and Errett walks. That brought the middle of the Royals lineup to the plate, and Beach delivered. Beach laced a single down the line that plated 2. Jameson promptly followed with a single of his own plating the Royals 3rd run. But the woodpeckers were unphased by their current deficit as they struck back in the 4th. The woodpeckers were able to get some base runners after a few Royals errors that in the end would hurt. A single by Marshall tied the game up at 3, but stepping in for his pinch hit appearance, Ramsey sent the 2nd pitch he saw 325 feet, clearing the 320ft fence in left field plating 3 more. Down 6-3 the Royals made one last effort to knot the game up in the top of the 7th. Matthews and Dean were able to reach on errant throws, and Matthews was later plated by a Schwab groundball. But that was all she wrote for the Royals; the next 2 batters were retired to end the game. On the day Beach went 4 innings (3 ER / 1 K / 6 H / 0 BB & 1-3 w/2 RBI).
The Royals took the field for game 2 ready for action after the narrow loss in game one. Tim Payne started for the Royals on the hill and pitched what was a pretty nice gem until 1 pitch. Game 2 was a pitching duel all the way as the woodpeckers sent Klaus to the mound for them. In the early innings the Royals managed to get a few hits here and there but were unable to string them together to plate a few runs. For the Royals, Payne was pitching a 1 hitter into the 6th. In the sixth the woodpeckers got runners on first and second, and then lightning struck... Toby Stewart hit a 3-run HR on a hanging curve to break the scoreless drought. The woodpeckers picked up another pair of a dying quail shot just past 2nd base to end their half of the 6th up 5-0. In the bottom of the 6th Franklin reached on a botched ball, but Klaus settled in and retired the next 2 batters bringing the Royals RBI machine to the plate. Beach laced a 2B into the gap scoring the runner from first, but that was all for the Royals. Klaus had all he needed as he retired the next 4 batters to end the game. At the plate Runyon went 2-3 (2 2B) and Beach went 2-3 (1 2B/1 RBI). On the mound Payne went 6 innings allowing 5 runs (3 ER), striking out 5 before handing the ball off to Eric Jameson who finished the game recording 1 K. On the day Jameson pitched 3 scoreless innings over both games.

"Sox Come Back and Defeat Royals 9-8"
Player of the game: Eric Jameson - Royals
Royals - The Royals and Sox battled each other and the setting sun Thursday night. The Sox went up early picking up 1 in the first 3 innings. The Royals bounced back in the 4th to post a 4 spot on the board after a bases loaded 2B plated 2 off the bat of Eric Jameson (3-4, 2 2B, 3 RBI) and a Prudhoe single plated 2 more. As a follow-up to the 4th, the Royals plated another 3 in the 5th off a BB, 2B, 2B, 1B string, but that was all for the Royals hitters as the Sox relief shut the door. In the bottom of the 7th the Sox took the plate down 8-4. Jason Griffith (6 2/3 innings, 7 hits/4 BB/12 K's) struck out the first batter to bring around the top of the Sox order. McCaslin went down on strikes, but Griffith's blazing fastball squirted out of Franklin's mitt allowing McCaslin to reach base. That was all the life the Sox needed as they rallied to put 5 straight Sox on base and finally plating the game winner off a short single to right.
Recaps for Sunday July 24th, 2005:
"Woodpeckers Beat Astros 14-2"
Player of the game: Steve Louis - Astros
Astros - The Astros started out strong as Steve Louis hit a two run Homerun in the first to give the Stros an early 2-0 lead. But that was as good as it got. The Peckers got on the board with one in the bottom of the second to make it 2-1. The Peckers then followed that up with 5 more in the 3rd to take a 6-2 lead. The score remained 6-2 until the 6th when the Peckers added another 2 runs to increase the lead to 8-2. The Peckers then plated 6 more in the 8th for a final score 14-2. Steve Louis was 1 for 1 with a HR, 2 RBIs and 2 BBs.

Angels - Game 1: The Sox took the field first and the Angels quickly jumped out to a 4 run lead thanks to a 2-run RBI by Tom Long to drive in Jeff Dillard. Danny Ward walked and was quickly plated along with Tom Long by a double by Justin Newlen. Marty Cox then delivered an RBI double to plate Justin before the inning ended. The Sox answered with a run by McCaslin who was ribbied in by Houghson. Starting pitcher Greg Perkins walked to begin the 2nd and was plated after advancing on Jeff Dillard and Jeremy Cunningham singles, followed by a Sac fly by Tom Long to complete the 2nd inning scoring. The Sox again answered with a run by Diltz hit in by Kuhlke "the taller". The 3rd inning was scoreless by both teams, but the Angels charged back in the 4th with 4 runs by Jeremy Cunningham, Greg Stallard, Danny Ward, and Justin Newlen. Danny Ward's single plated one, Justin Newlen's double plated two, and Marty Cox again delivered a base hit RBI. The 5th inning saw runs by Jeremy, Tom L., and Greg S. with Tom Long and Justin Newlen providing the RBIs. The Sox answered with 2 in the 5th and 1 in the sixth, before making a three run charge at starter Greg Perkins. Jeff Dillard scored in the top of the 7th plated by an RBI from Tom Long, leaving the final score 13-8 in favor of the Halos. Players of the game..... The Sox scored one in the 5th and two in the 6th to tie the game. In the 7th, the visiting Sox scored 2 to take a 6-4 lead, but the Angels' Jeremy Cunningham and Tom Long reached on a hit and a walk respectively, when Justin Newlen again slammed a double to plate Jeremy and left himself and Tom long at 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Greg Perkins smacked a single to plate both runners and secure the win, 7-6. Players of the game...
Justin Newlen, 3-5, 3 RBIs, Jeremy Cunningham, 2-4, 1 run and 1 RBI, Greg Perkins, 2-4, game winning single with 2 RBIs.
Recap for Thursday July 21st, 2005:
"Knights Defeat Royals 9-3"
Player of the game: Nathan Schwab - Royals
Royals - The Royals and Knights took the field drenched from the humidity that was in the air. It wasn't enough to keep the ball from leaving the park though. In the top of the first the Royals struck first on a Franklin sacrifice fly that plated Schwab to take the early 1-0 lead. However in the bottom of the 1st Josh Jaynes connected on a high fastball to lift a 2 run HR into Left Center. The Knights plated a third run in the bottom of the 2nd to go up 3-1, but in the top of the third 32-year old Ron Runyon showed he still has some pop launching a 2 run HR of his own to left center to knot the game at 3. It would sit there as both offesenses stalled until the bottom of the 6th. In the bottom the Knights knocked out half of their 12 hits for the day, and plated 6 runs, 4 on 2 outs. The Royals took the plate in the top of the 7th hoping to plate some runs of their own, but Knights pitching closed the door with authority tallying 3 straight K's against the top of the Royals order to end the game 9-3. It was a tough loss for the Royals, but hard fought game by both squads. At the plate only Nathan Schwab (3-4, 1 2B, 1 run) and Royals rookie Kevin Prudhoe (2-3, 2 2B) were able to tally a multi-hit game.
Recaps for Sunday July 17th, 2005:
"Astros Defeat Rangers 8-7"
Players of the game: Jonmarc Lippincott,Clint Wolf - Rangers/Steve Louis, Brian Girard - Astros
Astros - The Astros came out swinging in the top of the 1st scoring 3 runs off of 5 hits. But The Rangers answered back with 2 of their own in the bottom of the 1st. The score remained 3-2 until the bottom of the 3rd when the Rangers plated 4 runs to take a 6-3 lead. The Astros slowly battled back. After adding 1 in the 4th, Steve Louis hit a solo homerun in the 5th to cut the Ranger lead to 6-5. Its stayed 6-5 until the 7th. With one out, Gregg Foster reached on an error to start the Astro rally. After a Steve Louis single, Rob Johnson grounded out to second to knock in the tying run. With two outs Will Walters singled up the middle to drive in another run to make the score 7-6. John Forman then added his third hit and third RBI of the day to give the Astros an 8-7 lead. The Rangers wouldn't go quietly though as they added a run in the bottom of the 7th to cut the lead to 8-7. But Astro pitcher Brian Girard finished off his complete game on the mound by closing the door and preserving the one run victory for the Astros. Steve Louis led the Astros offensively going 4 for 5 with a Homerun 2RBIs and 3 runs scored. John Forman was 3 for 4 with 3 RBIS and 4 stitches. Brian Girard pitched a complete game allowing 4 earned runs while striking out 10.
Rangers - Recap
"Angels Rout Royals 14-2"
Players of the game: Jeff Dillard - Angels/Mark Franklin, Jason Griffith - Royals
Angels - The Angels started the game with only 8 players but didn’t let that slow them down. Six runs were scored in the first led by Jeremy Cunningham’s triple. Pitcher Greg Stallard didn’t need any more than that scattering 7 hits and 7 walks over 8 innings only allowing 2 runs. The defense played errorless ball for the first time all year including a couple of text book double plays and a flashy play by Tommy Thygerson down at 3rd base. The Angels brought out the bats again in the 6th scoring 5 runs, 2 of which came on a 2 out triple by Scott Falkowski. The game ended in the 8th by run rule after a bloop single by Tommy knocked in Danny to go up by 12. Key stats: Jeff Dillard (3-5, 2B, 3B, 3 RBI, 2 RS), Greg Stallard (8 IP, 2 ER, 7 H), Jeremy Cunningham (2-5, 2 RBI, 2 RS, 3B), Scott Falkowski (2-5, 3 RBI, 3B).
Royals - The Royals took the field Sunday trying to recover from their last double-digit loss. Royals morale was high after the Angels took the field with only 8 guys, but this was not about to slow them down. The Royals went down 1-2-3 in the top of the first and the Angels took the plate. In the bottom of the first the Angels sent 10 hitters to the plate and knocked out 5 extra base hits posting a six-spot on the first inning scoreboard. The Royals picked up their 2 runs off a Jason Griffith triple which scored Runyon, and Griffith later scored on a passed ball. But that would be it for the Royals as they were only able to muster another 2 hits over the remaining part of the game, while the Angels continued to tack on some runs. Defensively ,the Royals looked good, but the Angels just hit the gaps, and at Rotary that is a hit to the jugular! "Rangers 'Trip up' Angels 8-7"
Players of the game: Jonmarc Lippincott/Joe Staten - Rangers
Angels - In a comedy of errors where Rangers Manager Jonmarc Lippincott was the star defenseman at shortstop, pegging several impressive yet aggravating put-outs without an error. The Rangers scored two more in the fourth and the Angels answered with one in the fifth. The Rangers added one more in the 6th after the Angels scored 2, almost 3 when Angels Manager Tommy Thygerson performed a flawless triple gainer, 3/4 of the way home, which allowed the throw to make it home in time to tag him out after Bob Overbeek slammed a liner to left. The Angels came within one after Marty "Corky" Cox doubled in two runs, when Tommy Thygerson again hit his second grass deadening base hit. Corky intentionally got himself in a rundown between second and third to try and score the tying run from third but Jim "Mac" McMahon broke too late and Corky was tagged with Mac a step away from the tying run to end the game. Rangers - Recap
"Astros and Angels Split Twinbill"
Players of the game: Mike Leach, Brian Girard - Astros/Greg Stallard, Jeremy Cunningham - Angels
Astros - Game 1
The Angels jumped out early plating two runs in the top of first, The Astros then matched them with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first with RBIS from Steve Louis and Jeremy Campbell. The Pitchers and defense for both sides then settled in and the game remained deadlocked at 2 until the bottom of the sixth. Travis Dekenberger singled for the Astros and stole second base to get himself in scoring position. With two outs Astro Rookie Will Walters came to the plate and in only his second career at bat came through in the clutch with an RBI Double to give the Astros the 3-2 lead. Astros Starter Brain Girard then Finished the Angels in the Seventh to preserve the 3-2 win. Brian Girard picthed a complete game 7 innings with 0 earned runs 5 hits and 6 Ks. Will Walters lead the offense going 1 for 2 with a Double and the game winning RBI.
Game 2
Once Again The Angels Jumped out early but this time they really Jumped High. After some timely Angel Hitting and several costly Astro Errors, The Angels Built a 13-0 lead after just two innings. But The Stros would battle back scoring 5 in the third and 4 in the sixth to cut the deficit to 13-9. However the Early lead proved to be too much and after one more run for insurance the Angels took game two 14-9. Mike Leach was 2 for 4 with a triple and two runs scored and Vince Terek was 2 for 3 to lead the Astros offensively. Tony Walters worked 4 innings in relief giving up just one earned run.
Angels - Game 1 saw another great pitching performance by Greg Stallard go down the tubes due to some fielding mistakes and base running miscues. The Angels struck first plating two runs off of two Astro errors. No Angels would again cross the plate even though runners were stranded on base in every inning after that. The Astros also scored two in the first after an error led off the inning. No runners would even reach second base after that until the sixth inning when a couple of singles scored the game winner. Key stats: Greg Stallard (6 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 3 BB, 8 K), Adam Duane (2-3)
Game two started off with a bang for the Angels. Twelve runs were scored after batting around in each the first two innings. Jeremy Cunningham had three hits, Justin Newlen and Greg Stallard both had two hits in those first two innings. The bats cooled off the rest of the game scoring once more in the seventh. Angels pitching was just good enough to win holding off a late Astros’ surge in the sixth scoring four off closer Adam Duane, the first right hander seen all day. Amadeus Carter got the win pitching four innings giving up five runs. Key stats: Jeremy Cunningham (4-5, 2 2B, 4 RBIs), Greg Stallard (2-2, 2 RBIs), Jeff Dillard (2-4, 2 RS, 2 RBIs)
"Knights Win First Game, Defeat Royals 15-5"
Players of the game: Ron Runyon - Royals
Royals - The Royals faced off under the lights against the Knights who were still looking for that first win. The Royals had already surrendered win #1 to the Outlaws earlier in the year, and fought hard to make sure it didn't happen again. However that was not to be the case. Miscues in the field, and silent bats were a recipe for disaster. The Knights came out swinging early and were able to post up 3 runs over the first 4 innings before the Royals were able to plate a pair. Nathan Schwab scored the Royals first run off a Runyon double. Runyon later scored in the inning after Phil Beach connected on a sharp single up the box. That was as close as the Royals would get to the hungry Knights as they plated 4 in the 5th, 2 in the 6th, 3 in the 7th, and 3 in the 9th. On the mound Payne and Jameson pitched good games, but didn't get any help at the plate or in the field. It was a tough loss for the Royals squad, but the dark night sky and gleam of the lights must be the Royals kryptonite as they are 1-4 in games starting after 4 PM... The Royals were led at the plate by Ron Runyon's 3-4 (1 run, 1 RBI, 2 2B, 1 SB), Franklin (2-4, 1 run), and Beach (2-4, 2 RBI's).

Two more hits had men on 1st and 2nd when the final batter grounded into a fielders choice. The Rangers responded with 2 runs in the bottom of 1, but the Angels Jeff Dillard doubled to start the next inning and Bob Overbeek promptly singled him in. The Rangers scored two more while their starter settled down and shut down the Angels offense for 4 innings before a walk, a hit by starting picher Greg Perkins who pitched a solid 6 innings of 4 run ball, and a timely single by Chris Rock to score a cushion run in the top of 7. "Astros Defeat Royals 12-1"
Players of the game: Nathan Schwab - Royals
Royals - On Sunday the Royals took the field without a handful of familiar faces in the Royals dugout. But facing the adversity Phil Beach took the mound to make the best of the day. Beach threw 6 innings fanning 11 and walking 10. The Astros hit hard at the beginning and at the end of the game posting two 4-run innings. The nail in the coffin came in Beach's sixth and final inning of the day where a tight strike zone and some control issues walked the bases loaded before a wayward ball caught Gregg Foster in the back to plate a freebie. The Astros' Steve Louis knocked a bases clearing double in the gap that plated 3. This put the game out of reach for the Royals as they went up by 9. The skipper made a call to the bullpen for some relief, giving Royal rookie Dan Losito the ball. Losito looked good on the mound after finding his landing spot, recording 4 strikeouts in 2 innings of work. At the plate, the Royals had their chances but couldn't pull through with that much needed hit with runners in scoring position. The Royals had 11 runners left on base; bases loaded twice and runners at 2nd & 3rd twice over the course of the game. Royal hitters tallied 11 hits on the day, but just couldn't string those together to plate some runs. Bright spot at the plate, Nathan Schwab went 3-5 w/1 run scored, Kevin Prudhoe went 2-4 w/1 RBI, and Ron Runyon and Eric Jameson both went 2-3.
"Rangers Run Rule Outlaws 16-2"
Player of the game: Jacob Robinson/Jelani Arnold - Rangers
Rangers - The Rangers scored double-digits in runs for the second consecutive game. This time, the outcome was a little more favorable to the Rangers squad. Fifteen Rangers hitters combined to pound out 15 hits in 7 innings en route to a 16-2 run rule victory. Jacob Robinson started on the mound for the Rangers. After throwing 2 shutout innings the week before, Rangers management felt it necessary to give Jacob a shot to start Game 2. And he didn't let down, as he lasted 5 innings striking out 6 batters, walking only one batter.
