Playoff Recaps for Sept. 18, 2010:

"Royals sweep Shockers for Championship"
Royals - The Kettering Royals and Warren County Shockers battled for the MVABL Championship on Saturday night at Athletes in Action for their best of 3 series. The Royals sent rookie Drew Dobbins to the mound for game 1, and the Shockers countered with their crafty veteran Damon Barr. The Shockers got off to a sharp start as leadoff man Chad Paden laced a single right back up the box. However, with the no-hitter gone Dobbs got to work getting a lazy fly-out and a pair of K's to end the top of the first. In the bottom of the first, Royals leadoff man Brian Duffy got on base doing what he does best working a 3-1 walk. Tim Biedenharn stepped in looking to move Duffy around but was unable to connect, which brought Chris Jergens up with 1 on and 1 out. Barr battled Jergens into a full count before Jergens won the battle launching a line drive 2-run homerun just over the short right field fence to put the Royals on the board.
Dobbs continued to work in the second silencing the Shockers bats. In the bottom of the 2nd the Royals went right back to work building on their 2-0 lead. Dobbins led off the offense with a single and was followed up by Adam Thomas two batters later with a single of his own. With 2 on, Brian Duffy laced a double to the gap to score Dobbins and Thomas, and he would then come around to score as Tim Biedenharn dropped a single just over the infielders before the inning came to an end.
Entering the top of the 3rd, the Royals held a 5-0 lead. Chris Kuhn knocked a double to the gap to lead things off for the Shockers. Another single off the bat of Paden would score Kuhn from 2nd for the Shockers 1st run of the game, but he wouldn't be on base long as Taylor Hause would plate him with a triple. Dobbs would get Scott Garrett out for the 2nd out of the inning, but Josh Allen would connect for an RBI single to plate Hause before Dobbins would get out of the inning.
With a slim 5-3 lead, the Royals would not score again until the bottom of the 4th when Brian Duffy would record his 2nd double of the game to plate Kevin Reynolds from 1st. Tim Biedenharn would get his 2nd RBI of the day with a double of his own to plate Duffy from second. Now with a bit of breathing room, the Royals held a 7-3 lead entering the halfway point of the game. In the top of the 5th the Shockers would cut the Royals lead in half as a single and a Royals fielding miscue would allow 2 runs to score. With the score holding 7-5 in the 6th, the Shockers would close the gap again as the Shockers reeled off 3 singles in a row to plate Jack Millard.
As the bottom of the 7th started with the Royals holding a slim 7-6 lead the Royals bullpen started to get ready, but the Royals batters recorded back-to-back-to-back hits of their own to score 3 and gain a bit of breathing room. After 7 the Royals were up 10-6, and Dobbins went back out to the mound trying to close out the game. In the top of the 8th Dobbs worked quickly only facing 4 Shockers and recorded his 7th and 8th K's of the game to get the Royals back in the dugout. In the bottom of the 8th the Dobbins again lead off the offense with a DEEP flyball that hit 2 feet down from the top of the center field fence for the easy double. Royals rookie DJ Swearingen moved Dobbins over with a sharp single. With runners on the corners 10 year Royals veteran Eric Jameson stepped into the box for his first AB of the game and quickly cashed in for the Boys in Blue belting a single that would score Dobbins and Swearingen. With a 12-6 lead Royals Skipper Mark Franklin sent Dobbins back out to the mound as he wanted to record the Complete Game, but the Shockers had different thoughts. Dobbins was able to get 2 quick outs bringing the top of the Shockers order back up to the plate. Paden got on base again for the 5th time of the day working the full count walk. He would then score as Hause was able to put a ball in play off the handle that went into right field as the setting giant ball of fire blinded Royals first baseman Shawn Rudegeair while trying to catch the throw from Dobbins. With 2 outs, Dobbins went back to the mound, but Garrett belted a double to plate Hause from 3rd. Josh Allen would again draw out the inning plating Hause with a single of his own. As the Shockers cut the Royals lead in half, and had already sent 6 batters to the plate Franklin went to the bullpen to bring Jergens in to close the door. After a brief warm-up Jergens would get an easy 1-3 groundball out to end game 1 with a Royals 12-9 victory.
After a brief break, both teams changed sides and took the field for the pivotal game 2. For the Royals a game 2 victory would claim the MVABL Championship, and a win for the Shockers would extend the series 1 more game. The Royals were the visitors in game 2 and didn't waste any time. Jergens got the first hit of game 2 lacing a single into the outfield. After a passball moved Jergens to 2nd Jesus Velasquez would plate him with a single of his own before the top of the first came to an end. With the Shockers coming to bat, the Royals sent Jason Holmberg to the mound looking to rebound from his short outting in the semi-finals a week prior, and Holmberg did not disappoint his Royals teammates. Holmberg started off the bottom of the 1st with 2 quick K's. Shockers' game 2 starter Scott Garrett tried to help his own cause with a quick single, but Holmberg snagged a shot back to the mound off the bat of Allen to end the inning. At the plate the Royals scored early and often plating runs in every inning of the game. Offensive highlights in game 2 were Biedenharn knocking a bases clearing double to plate 3 in the 4th, Swearingen recording his first solo HR as a Royal in the 6th, and Jergens belting a 3 run HR in the 8th. In the game the Royals were able to score 18 runs off 20 hits, 11 of which were extra base hits, in the 18-2 rout of the Shockers. The Royals batters wore down the Shockers pitchers over the final few innings once Garrett suffered an unfortunate shoulder dislocation and was forced to leave. On the mound for the Royals, Holmberg worked in and out of the Shockers lineup having quite possibly his best game of the year, where he recorded his highest K total of the year (9) to pickup the 8 inning complete game victory as Reynolds climbed the ladder to snag a laser off Paden's bat for the final out of the game to reclaim the MVABL Championship for the Boys in Blue.
On the day the Royals offense belted 37 total hits (14 2B / 1 3B / 3 HR) to plate 30 runs, and the defense were sharp only allowing 17 hits in 2 games. Off the mound, Dobbins and Holmberg recorded 17 total strikeouts and only offered up 4 free passes. It was a total team effort for the Boys in Blue as they were able to cap off a great season in which they went 21-10 on the year, but were 11-2 following the All-Star break to move out of the middle the league standings enroute to claim the 2010 MVABL Championship.

"Slammers sweep Thunder, 4-3, 11-1"
Slammers - The Miami Valley Thunder and South Dayton Slammers met for the fourth time this past Saturday August 28th to start their best of 3 first round playoff series. The game took place at Oak Grove Park in Centerville as the league found a new field to play on. The game was a pitcher's duel through the top of the fourth as starters Matt Walters and Justin Dunlap were throwing well. The Thunder took a 2-0 lead in the fourth on a double by Drew Bost. The Thunder added another run in the 6th on an errant pick off throw and then another errant throw to the 3B. So the Slammers entered the bottom of the 7th down 3-0. "Thunder Beat Indians 15-1"
Thunder - The Thunder and the Indians banged heads again making up the second game of the previously rained out doubleheader from back in June. Ramsey started the game for the Thunder (hey it worked last time) and went another 4 hard innings as the Indians hit the ball well. This time the Thunder jumped out to take the lead early scoring 2 runs in the first with none from the opposition. However, the tables turned in the 2nd inning as the Indians got unanswered runs on a 3-run homer over the left field fence. But the Thunder came back in the third on a walk, couple hits, and David Moss’s hustle around the bases manufactured a run as the last two Thunder bats K’d that inning. Tied 5 to 5 after 4 innings, Ramsey continued into the fifth inning, but after giving up a second HR to Spradlin on a hanging knuckleball, Greg Moss came in and finished out the game. Although the Indians scored 5 in the 5th, the Thunder never gave up and regained the lead on a 7 run rally in the bottom of the 5th as the whole lineup contributed. The Thunder tacked on 3 more insurance runs in the 6th as York crushed the ball for a monster 3-run HR (brand new baseball + York + bat = egg ball). Greg continued to pitch well, pitching two scoreless innings in the 6th and 7th picking up the win for the Thunder.

"Thunder win slugfest, beat Indians 16-13"
Thunder - The Thunder and the Indians finally got together to make up the first game of a rained out doubleheader from back in June. Ramsey started the game for the Thunder and went a 4 hard innings as the Indians hit the ball well. The situation looked kind of dark in the fifth as the Thunder was down 9 to 5, but the Thunder managed to get 3 runs on a series of passed balls and walks. With the score 9 to 8 Indians and the lights on, James Hammock came in to pitch the 5th, but couldn’t find the strike zone and gave up 3 runs on no hits. Down by only 2 runs (12-10), Coach Ramsey called upon the secret weapon, Drew York, to shut the Indians down in the sixth. With no outs and 2 runners on, Drew came in throwing peas and dropping deuces off the table to bail the Thunder out of the jam. Then, the Thunder rallied big in the 7th inning to come from behind and take the lead for the first time in the game 16 to 12. Drew continued to scalp the Indians in the 7th, and despite giving up a run on a walk and double, he struck out the side for the Thunder win.

Schaeffer later drove a run in, followed by an RBI single from Jacob Robinson. But the Dragons took the lead back in the top of the 4th as they scored 5 runs of their own, capped off by a home run from Matt Berger.
Trailing 6-4 the Redlegs took the lead and put the game away all in the bottom of the 5th inning. The Redlegs racked up 9 hits in the inning which scored 13 runs. Recap for Thursday, July 8, 2010:

"Royals win first matchup with Astros, 9-5"
Royals - The Kettering Royals faced off against the Dayton Astros on Thursday night in their first meeting of the season. The game started off slow as the game was halted for a Monsoon Delay after the top of the first, but not before the Astros could plate the first run of the game. However, following the rain delay, both teams really pulled together to uncover the dry dirt from beneath the wetness using cleats and boards. Luckily the Astros dugout was perfectly sheltered from the blowing rain and happened to be filled with a dry dirt-like substance that helped dry up some of the puddles. So once the game resumed the game went back and forth before some the Royals' batters out-lasted the Astros' pitching. Astros starter Garrent Copas had a good start, but had to throw a lot of pitches before leaving the mound. The Royals were then able to plate a few more runs. With a 9-3 lead entering the top of the 9th Royals starter Jason Holmberg looked to close out his first start in almost a month. The Astros were able to make it interesting as they were able to plate 2 more runs before the Royals were able to finally record the last out on a sharply hit line drive to Left Center. Great game to both teams, and also great job to get the field fixed up enough to continue despite the horrible down pour.

Matt Walters started and pitched 4 2/3 innings striking out 6, allowing only 5 runs against a formidable offense. With Cards pitcher Thacker giving up another run in the 2nd, Thacker got into a jam in the 2nd with two outs when William Howard looked to take over for Thacker. William then walked in the 6th run for the Redlegs. With William taking over on the mound the Cards looked to get on the board, the Cards got on the board scoring 2 runs in the 5th inning. Taylor Guntle took the hill for the Redlegs and turned in another quality start going 6 innings, allowing 1 earned run and striking out 4. Taylor now leads the Redlegs staff with a 3-0 record on his rookie season.
In game one the Redlegs found themselves in an early hole as the Shockers put one on the board promptly in the 1st to take a 1-0 lead. But the Redlegs answered in the bottom of the frame and didn't look back, scoring three times highlighted by a 3 run double off the bat of John Long. In the second Matt Mattice brought Eric Williams in on a sac fly to give the Redlegs a 4-1 advantage. The Redlegs kept the pressure on in the 4th as Jared Bradley led the inning off with a double, followed by a single from Robinson to put runners on the corners. After a steal from Robinson, Brad Clark singled in both runners to push the Redlegs lead to 6-1. The Shockers tried to fight back in the 6th, getting back to back walks to start the inning. But Guntle settled down and stopped the rally and allowed only one run to score on a groundout. The Redlegs then played add on in the bottom of the 6th as Mattice led of the inning with a walk and then stole second, only to be brought in on a triple from Taylor Guntle. John Long later brought Guntle in with his 4th RBI on the game. Jacob Robinson then made his second appearance on the mound in the 7th, allowing only 1 hit to shut the door on the Shockers.     In game two the Redlegs gave 2nd round draft choice Eric Williams the nod, making his Redlegs debut on the mound. Williams went the distance, pitching the complete game and only 3 of the 8 runs he gave up were earned as the Redlegs were unable to provide a strong defense behind him. He also struck out 6 in the game as he picked up his first career win in the MVABL.
The Redlegs took an early lead in the top of the 1st as Robinson led of the game with a walk and stole second, and was later driven in on a double from Taylor Guntle. They scored again as Long led off the 2nd with a triple and was later driven in on a groundball that resulted in a double play. But the momentum soon shifted in favor of the Shockers as they scored 2 in the bottom of the second, 1 in the third, and 3 more in the 4th taking a 6-2 lead after 5. The Redlegs chipped away in the 6th as Mattice walked and stole second, and was later driven in on a grounder from Brad Clark. Things looked grim as the Redlegs went into the top of the 7th trailing 6-3, but quickly started a rally as Howard walked to lead off the inning, followed by a single from Long and an RBI double from newcomer Derek Graham. Zach Clendenen then walked to load the bases. After a passed ball that brought the score to 6-5, Eric Williams singled to load the bases once again. Bradley then drove in a run on a tough grounder that caused a Shockers error. Jacob Robinson then delivered a 2RBI triple to push the lead to 9-6, followed by an RBI groundout by Matt Mattice.    Astros - The Dayton Astros picked up a quality early season win Sunday against the always tough Beavercreek Sox. Astros' starter Jared Whited shut the Sox down in the first, then after giving up a solo homerun in the second, gave way to the heat and fellow Astros rookie Mike Dunfee in the third. Dunfee worked out of a jam in the third and then went into cruise control. Mike did not allow a hit until the 9th when the Sox would mount a late rally scoring two off back-to-back doubles to cut the lead to 4-3. But Dunfee would not be denied as he collected his 12th K of the day to close the game with the tying run on base. Dunfee's impressive debut included 6-2/3 IP, 2 hits, 2 runs and 12K's. Offensively Evan Tennery and PJ Dobbins were solid at the top of the Astros lineup collecting 2 hits each.

"Slammers off to best start in franchise history"

The Slammers sent out Sean Casey for his third start of the season as he looked to remain perfect. After holding the Dragons scoreless in the top of the first the Slammers were able to plate 6 runs in their half of the inning as the Slammers had three hits and three walks. Casey went 7 innings, allowing 0 runs, 5 hits, 2 walks, and 7 strike outs. Luke Lawson came in to pitch the 8th and the Dragons were able to plate 2 runs to cut the deficit to 10-2. "Ramsey's walk off single keeps Thunder undefeated"
Thunder - The Thunder comeback in the 9th inning scoring 2 to tie it, and a walk off RBI single for the win after trailing most of the game. Matt Walters started on the hill with 3 no hit innings, but then in the 4th, an error at first prompted a series of hits and 3 run inning for the Dragon's offense. Matt pitched really well through 6 innings allowing 6 unearned runs, but striking out 11 batters. With the score 6 to 2, John Ramsey came in to pitch the seventh. John pitched 3 scoreless innings despite loading the bases in the 8th with no outs on two walks and an error, and giving up two hits in the 9th. With the score 6 to 4 in the bottom of the 9th, the Thunder started the inning with 2 walks and a hit batter. Once Koogler got hit by the pitch, we knew our game was on! Drew York scored on a pass ball, and the runners shifted as Greg Moss stood in the batters box. Greg hit one back to the pitcher and David Moss tried in vain to tie it up, but the Dragons got the fielder's choice at home for the 1st out. Now with Koogs on third and Greg on first, Drew Bost singled in the tying run. John Connell came up with 2 runners on and popped up to third base for the second out, so it was up to Thunder coach, John Ramsey to drive in the game winner. First pitch fast ball was smacked foul down the 3rd base line, John took the next pitch in the dirt for a ball. With the count 1-1, Ramsey hits a rope single to right center to drive in the winning run...The Thunder Wins 7 to 6! And remains undefeated 6 and 0 overall (4 - 0 in division).

The Royals were able to get a quick 2-0 lead as Duffy and Finster were both able score from 3rd on passed balls. The Shockers would plate one of their own in the top of the 4th as they would also score another on a wild pitch. But in the bottom of the 4th, the Royals were again patient at the plate and were able to walk home a free run for a 3-1 lead. In the top of the 6th though the Shockers were able to plate a pair to tie the game at 3. Tied at 3, the Royals 2nd leadoff man, Jesus Velasquez, started things off for the Royals in the bottom half of the 6th with a sharp single. The Boys in Blue were able to plate 3 quick ones with a single by Duffy, a Sac Fly from DJ Swearingen, and a single by Jergens was able to plate 1 and allowed Jameson to scamper home on the Shockers throwing error. With a comfortable 7-3 lead Dobbins went back out for 1 more inning. The Shockers started the 7th off with a sharp single of their own to RF, and he was able to scamper around the bases and score on 4 wild pitches for the Shockers final run. Dobbins would re-focus and close out the 8th. Heading into the 9th Jergens took the mound for the Boys in Blue looking to pickup the save. Jergens worked quickly picking up back-to-back strikeouts. However with back-to-back hits the Shockers get runners at 1st and 2nd to make things a bit interesting before Jergens picked up his 3rd K of the 9th for the save.

"Royals Need Extras to Topple Redlegs 4-3"
Royals - On Saturday against the Redlegs the Royals were able to squeak out the victory, 4-3, in a long 10 inning game with the curfew clock expired... Kevin Reynolds started for the Royals in his first outing of the season and had a great game. He held the Redlegs to 2 runs, only 1 earned, in 6 strong innings. Looking to setup closer Chris Jergens, Royals rookie DJ Swearingen took the hill looking for the setup. Swearingen quickly worked through his first inning sitting down the side in only 11 pitches. However in the 8th, Swearingen would have 1 mistake. After a leadoff walk, Swearingen picked up another strikeout to bring Howard to the plate. Falling behind in the count Howard got the pitch he wanted and placed it in the gap to tie the game at 3 before the inning would end. The Royals would blank the Redlegs in the 9th and the 10th to get to the plate all tied at 3 with no time left on the clock. Royals leadoff man Brian Duffy reached 1st with a free pass. The Royals next hitter was set down bringing Chris Jergens to the plate. Jergens came through connecting for his first hit of the game to move Duffy to 3rd. The Redlegs would then intentionally load'em up needing a double play anywhere on the bases. However 2 pitches later Duffy was able to score from 3rd off a passed ball in the dirt for the exciting 4-3 victory.

"Redlegs Topple Astros 9-5"
Redlegs - The Redlegs got the Mother's Day victory over the Astros on Sunday, winning by a final tally of 9-5. Taylor Guntle took the hill for the Redlegs, making his first starting appearance in his brief MVABL career. "T-Gun" silenced the Astros bats for most of the day, allowing 4 hits, 2 earned runs, and piling up 9 strikeouts in a complete game effort.
The Redlegs continued their trend of scoring early by putting 4 runs on the board in the first inning, all the damage being done with two outs. Taylor Guntle reached first after being hit by a pitch and Brandon Howard and James Robinson walked in succession to load the bases. John Long then brought in two runs with a double to right center, one of his four hits on the day. After Andrew Alcorn reached on an error, which scored James Robinson, Dalton Cox doubled in Long in his first MVABL at bat.
The Astros fought back in the 2nd, putting 3 runs on the board helped largely by 3 Redleg errors. But after that it was smooth sailing for Guntle and the Redlegs. In the 4th inning, Robinson led off with a single, and promptly stole second, allowing Mattice to drive him in with a double bringing the score 5-3. In the 7th Howard singled, followed by a walk to Robinson, then Long and Alcorn delivered back to back RBI singles to give the Redlegs a 7-3 advantage. Recap for Saturday, May 8, 2010:

"Dragons Knock off Royals 11-6"
Dragons - The Dragons played on a rare Saturday game on what was to be a very blustery afternoon. TJ Lee was on the bump for the boys in green. Lee looked impressive all day long, striking out 9 and only walking 3. Ground balls and pop ups were the key to his success. The Dragons started there scoring in the 3rd when they managed to get the bases loaded and Brian Bay would single driving in 2. Almost an identical situation to the 3rd, when in the 4th the same Dragons, Smith, Robinson and Cope would load the bases a second straight inning for Bay. He would deliver with a bases clearing triple. Once the Dragons got the lead, they never looked back. The real story of the day, was how every single Dragon was involved in the win. From diving plays at third and center, to solid infield play and pitching. 11 of 12 Dragons were able to reach base. Truly a great win for this still young franchise trying to make there mark. Player of the Game: #7 B. Bay (3-4) 3B, SB, 5 RBI, 3 Runs scored.

"Royals Beat Shockers 17-2"
Royals - The Boys in Blue took the field Sunday night under the rain and lights looking to redeem their mercy-rule loss the week prior to the Thunder. The Royals knew they didn't play the Thunder the way they could and were hoping to prove it. Taking the hill for the Royals was MVABL veteran Bryan Braswell. This was Braswell's first game in several years. However it didn't take him long to return to form facing 3 batters in the top of the first K'ing 2 to get the Royals to the plate and out of the rain. In the bottom-half of the first, the Royals started slow as they faced a new Shockers pitcher, who quickly recorded a K of his own and a fly-out to center before Chris Jergens belted a ball off the centerfield fence for the Royals first base runner. Frank Burgos followed up with a quick single of his own to move Jergens over to third before he was able to score on a dropped ball for the first run of the game. In the top of the second the Shockers would answer as Taylor Hause started them off with a quick single. The Royals would get 2 quick outs, but the Shockers loaded the bases with the help of another single and a HBP. Chris Kuhn got his team on the board has he belted a 2-out double to the gap before the inning would end. The Royals would counter in the bottom of the 2nd as they would string together some hits of their own. Royals rookie Drew Dobbins led off the inning with a double and would come around to score as Braswell would help his own cause with a double to the gap to tie the game at 2. Braswell would later come around to score on another Shockers error. The Royals held a 3-2 lead after 2.
As the Royals took the field in the top of the 3rd the cold rain began to fall. The Shockers led off the inning with a walk as Braswell tried to work the corners on the Shockers lead-off man. However the base runner was quickly erased on a Strike'em out, Throw'em out for 2 quick outs. Braswell then ended the inning with his 5th K of the game. The Royals themselves would be silenced in the bottom of the 3rd as the rain stopped. As the Shockers took the plate in the top of the 4th trailing by one they looked to get on track as they led off with a double. However the lead runner was quickly erased on a fielder's choice on the very next batter. Braswell then got an easy flyball out to center and his 6th K to end the inning. With a slim 3-2 lead the Royals looked to get some offense going, but again they started slow as the Shockers recorded 2 quick outs before Jergens laced his 2nd double of the game. Burgos would follow-up with a double of his own to short left-field. with runners at 2nd and 3rd Shawn Rudegeair would empty the bases with a triple to the gap for his first hit of the season and would later score on a single by Matt Finster to increase the Royals lead to 4 as the 4th inning came to a close.
The Royals would work quickly through the top of the 5th going 1-2-3 to get back in the dugout. The flood gates would open for the Boys in Blue as the Shockers had a few key errors in the inning, again coming with 2 outs. In the bottom of the 5th the Royals would send 14 batters to the plate and score 9 runs before the rubber pellets settled. In the top of the 6th the Royals held a 15-2 lead over the Shockers, but they were unable to get any offense going as Braswell was able to get the Shockers to hit into 2 easy groundball outs and pickup his 8th K of the game. In the bottom of the 6th the Shockers pitchers had some control issues and the Royals were able to load up the bases. Rudegeair led off the inning reaching first after being hit by the pitch. Dobbins then moved him over to 3rd with a single, his 3rd hit of the game. Finster would score Rudegeair from 3rd with a single of his own, also his 3rd hit of the game. Then Braswell would then load'em up getting hit in the thigh. Royals catcher Mark Franklin would end the game with a ground ball fielder's choice to plate the game-ender for a Royals victory by a score of 17-2.

"Redlegs Knock of Rangers"
Redlegs - The Redlegs and Rangers squared off at Athletes in action where the rain fell for most of the day. In the back and forth contest the Redlegs were able to top the defending champs by a score of 7-6.
Kevin Schaeffer made his first start of the season for the Redlegs and pitched well, going 7 innings, giving up 3 earned runs and striking out 6. The Redlegs got on the board first as Taylor Guntle launched the first home run in Redlegs history over the scoreboard in left field, it was his first homerun of the season. In the top of third the Redlegs kept the pressure on, pushing 4 more runs across to take a 5-0 lead. Jared Bradley led off with a single and scored on a triple from Matt Mattice, who promptly scored on a double from Jacob Robinson. Two batters later Brad Clark took his first homerun of the season to opposite field to end the innings scoring.
Rangers starter Shawn Schmitt then silenced the Redlegs bats for the next five innings; Schmitt had 14 K's on the day. The Rangers got one run back in the 2nd as Ben Schooler doubled in Shane Fallen who had previously tripled to start the inning. In the 4th the Rangers brought two more runs home on solo homeruns from James Robinson and Jake Kingsolver. The Rangers were also able to score 2 runs in the 8th highlighted by an RBI by Steve Marshall, and another in the 8th on a sac fly from Kingsolver.
With the Redlegs trailing 6-5 going into the top of the 9th Taylor Guntle led the inning off with a single and stole second before going to third on a single by Steve Benthal. Jared Bradley then singled Guntle home to tie the game at 6. Mattice then singled, and brought Robinson to the plate with 2 outs and the bases loaded. With the go ahead run at third base, Robinson delivered a single through the right side of the infield scoring Benthal, but Bradley was gunned down at the plate by Rangers right fielder Shane Fallen to end the inning. Taylor Guntle, who took over for Schaeffer in the 8th, closed the door on the Rangers in the 9th to get the victory.

"Indians Soak Redlegs 17-12"
Redlegs - As the rain continued to fall at Athletes in Action, the Redlegs headed back onto the field to take on the Springfield Indians in game 2 of a split double header.
Things seemed to be going in the right direction early, as the Redlegs were able to score 12 times in the first 3 innings. Jacob Robinson led off the game with a triple to right, and scored on a groundball from Kevin Schaeffer. Schaeffer scored on a double by Brandon Howard, who later scored on a bases loaded walk by Steve Benthal. In the second Matt Mattice led off with a single, and made his way around the bases to score on multiple passed balls. After walks to Schaeffer and Clark, Brandon Howard brought Schaeffer in on a fielders choice and Clark scored on a passed ball. The next four batters walked to bring in another run giving the Redlegs a 7-1 lead. In the third Robinson doubled, Schaeffer walked, and both were brought in on a double by Brad Clark. Howard then reached on an error and Guntle singled to load the bases for the Redlegs. Benthal then walked in a run, and Bradley brought 2 runs in when reaching on an error. This brought the score to 12- 1, but things were soon to change for the worse.
The Indians then scored 16 unanswered runs, highlighted by a 9 run 5th inning to come from behind and win the game at a final tally of 17-12.

"Thunder Rain on Astros Parade, Win 8-5"
Thunder - The Thunder remains undefeated after a 9 to 5 win over the Dayton Astros in a 7 inning game shortened by an intermission due to inclement weather and the 2 hour 45 minute time limit. Matt Walters pitched 6 strong innings against the formidable offense allowing only 4 hits, 3 runs (2 earned), and striking out 5. David Moss pitched the 7th inning to close out the game. David Moss also led the Thunder's offense going 2 for 3 with a 3-run homerun, a single and a walk. Lee Jury came off the DL to go 3 for 5 and score 3 runs, and John Connell went 1 for 1 to continue his hitting streak despite only having 1 at bat this game.

"Redlegs Outlast Cards to get First Franchise Win"
Redlegs - The Camden Redlegs picked up their first franchise win Sunday night at Action Sports Complex by topping the Miami Valley Cardinals 16-13. In the 3 hour and 50 minute marathon, 30 combined walks were issued on the night.
Brian Kuhbander took the hill and was effective though the first 4 innings, giving up 1 unearned run and striking out 6 Red Bird hitters. Kuhbander ran into some trouble in the 5th as the Cardinals were able to plate 5 runs, 4 earned, in the frame. It appeared the struggling offense of the Redlegs would continue from last week as the hitters were silenced through the first 4 innings, only managing 2 runs until the 5th. The Redlegs got on the board in the 3rd starting with a walk to lead off man Jacob Robinson, and a quick RBI double from Jared Bradley. They added another run in the 4th as Taylor Guntle and Kevin Schaeffer singled back-to-back putting runners on the corners. Guntle was able to later score on a passed ball, giving the Redlegs a 2-1 lead.
However, the lead was short-lived as the Cardinals opened things up in the top of the 5th. The Cardinals put together five base hits to bring 5 runs home in the frame, taking a 6-2 advantage. The Redlegs came right back in the bottom of the 5th scoring 6 runs of their own as batters walked 5 times in the inning. Robinson led off the inning with a walk and promptly stole second. After a strikeout, Brad Clark walked, and Brandon Howard reached on an error, which brought Robinson in to score from 2nd. Guntle then walked to load the bases. Kevin Schaeffer then lined a ball into right field where Cardinals right fielder Dwain Kirtley snagged it on a diving catch, robbing his former high school coach of extra bases. It would suffice as a sacrifice fly however, as Clark was able to score from third, inching the Redlegs closer by bringing the score to 6-4. Kuhbander was then hit by a pitch to reload the bases, followed by RBI walks from catcher Steve Benthal and 1B Andrew Alcorn. Matt Mattice and Jacob Robinson singled in succession to bring two more runs home to finish the innings scoring and giving the Redlegs a 8-6 lead.
The Redlegs were then able to play 'add on' in the 6th and 7th innings scoring 8 more runs, highlighted by two 2RBI singles by Brian Kuhbander, and RBI singles from Mattice and Robinson. Taylor Guntle relieved Kuhbander in the 6th and struck out 6 batters through 3 innings. But the Cards' got to Guntle in the 7th as they were able to plate 4 runs, including a bases clearing double from Chad Jaynes. With the score standing at 16-10 in favor of the Redlegs going into the top of the 9th, Andrew Alcorn took over on the mound making his first pitching appearance of the season. Alcorn had some trouble finding the strike zone walking 5 batters and giving up one base hit, which narrowed the lead to 16-13. With two outs in the 9th and the go ahead run at the plate the Redlegs turned to Kevin Schaeffer to shut the door. Schaeffer quickly dispatched his man, getting a pop fly to second to end the game and record the first save in Redlegs history.
   Offensive Highlights: Jacob Robinson 2-3, 3RBI, 3BB, 2R, SB. Brad Clark 0-0, 5BB, 3R. Taylor Guntle 2-4, 2BB, 4R. Brian Kuhbander 2-4, 4RBI, 2R. Matt Mattice 3-4, 2RBI, BB.

"Astros Move to 2-0 With 18-2 Win over Dragons"
Astros - The Stros showed their mighty bats as they collected 19 hits and 18 runs over 8 innings. Shawn Haffner aka Iron Man showed his strength once again as he threw a 3 hit gem. Players of the game - Offensive: Garrett Copas 3hits 1BB 4R and a Sac Fly; Defensive: Shawn Haffner 8inn. 3H 2R 10K's.
Dragons - In a most imperfect night for baseball, the Dragons struggled to find there niche. Aaron Bischoff was on the hill for the fire breathers in a game that went late into a cold Sunday night. Things started off decent for the boys in green. Bishoff walked an early batter that led to a run, but then struck out two to end the inning. The second inning did not go so well for the Dragons. Allowing 5 runs off a handful of hits and stolen bases. Bischoff still showed he had something, striking out two more to end the inning. The Dragons would get a quick third inning, followed by what would be the downfall inning of the game. The fourth saw five more runs through scattered hits and walks. TJ Lee would also come in to replace Bischoff in the fourth. The Astro bats didnt cool down for Lee. Scoring six more runs in three innings of work. Scott Jones would come on to finish the game on the hill. Giving up five runs in two innings of work. The Dragon bats did not fair much any better on this night. Only mustering two runs on two hits. One of those hits came in the top of the first when Jones doubled to start the game, then scoring on a Wolter ground out. This might be the only bright spot of the evening as the Dragons would strike out 10 times. The Dragons did manage to steal six bases with some of there newly added talent.

"Rangers Beat Slammers 15-3"

"Thunder Move to 2-0 in Division, Beat Royals 17-5"
Thunder - The Miami Valley Thunder win over the Kettering Royals in 7 innings under the run rule 17 to 5. The Thunder’s offense quickly took advantage of a series of Royals errors early in the game putting 14 runs on the board in the first three innings while batting through the order in the first and third innings. Meanwhile, the Thunder’s starting pitcher, John Ramsey, kept the Royals offense at bay with a no-hitter through 4 innings to make it 14 to 1 after 4. The Royals bats came to life briefly in the fifth inning as Ramsey tired and began to miss his spots. The Thunder’s bats seemed to tire out as well, the last 2 scoreless innings, but fortunately, Thunder pitcher, Greg Moss did a great job of shutting the Royals down for 2 innings giving up only 2 hits and a walk until the 7th inning run-rule took effect.
Royals - The Royals faced off against the Miami Valley Thunder Sunday in their first matchup of the season. However, the Royals didn't show up to play until it was too late. After they cruised to an opening day victory over the Cardinals, the Thunder gave them a dose of their own medicine, but not without some assistance. The Royals didn't look right from the get-go. Things looked bad as the infield warm-ups weren't on target, little did the team know this was foreshadowing for the game to come. As The Royals committed a plethora of errors in the first 3 innings of play that allowed the Thunder to plate 14 runs! The majority of those runs scored with 2 outs... The Royals tried to right the bus, but down 14-1 after 3 the damage was too much to overcome. They were able to string together some offense in the 5th, putting together 4 consecutive hits to plate 4 runs, but the Thunder killed the Royals rally with a inning-ending double play. That was the only ray of hope for the Boys in Blue as they were not able to get out from under the 12-run mercy rule before the end of the 7th to end the game early.

"Dragons Claw Back to Beat Shockers 12-11"
Dragons - On a perfect afternoon for baseball, the Dragons brought there "A" game. Lefty TJ Lee was on the bump for the fire-breathers. He got off to a good start only allowing 4 hits and 1 earned run in the first four innings. A nice pick off play by Lee and the Dragons came in the 4th when #20 of the Shockers was caught in a pickle then tagged out. The 5th would see the end of Lee as he began to struggle a bit giving up a 3-run HR. The Dragons now faced a 7-0 deficit and things not looking good for the Dragon bats. Mustering up only 3 hits and striking out 6 times. But then things would change drastically for the Dragons in the following innings.
Bay led off the 5th with a hit by pitch and would later score after a couple of back-to-back singles by Cope and Mac. Bay would take over pitching for Lee and pitched very well. Holding the Shockers in check for the next four innings. The Dragon bats would come alive in the sixth. With the Dragons trailing 7-1, a couple of walks and back-to-back singles by newcomers Baker and Robinson, rookie Troy Pearson would smash a bases-clearing triple deep into the gap change the game for good. With rookie Josh Lambright reaching on a fielders choice, team leader and coach Scott Jones ripped a game-tying double, scoring Lambright. The Dragons would break the tie and take the lead for good in the seventh. Rookie Matt Berger singled, then stole third. Then, the next 7 of 9 batters would walk giving the Dragons plenty of run insurance, so they thought. The Dragons now up 12-7, they were only 6 outs away from a much deserved win, when the Shockers made their attempt at a comeback. Scoring 3 of 4 runs in the 9th, coach Jones called upon himself. Two out, top of the 9th, tying run on first, and Jones gets a ground out to third and picks up the save. Brian Bay picks up his first career win.
Player of the Game: Troy Pearson (1st career hit was a bases-clearing triple that changed the game) stats: 1-2 3B, BB, 3 RBI's

"Thunder win barnburner over Indians, 14-12"
Thunder - In a lengthy nine inning game that was riddled with injuries, errors and walks on both sides, the Miami Valley Thunder outlast the Springfield Indians to win 14-12. Winning pitcher for the Thunder was rookie Matt Walters, who pitched a solid 5 2/3 innings in middle relief, while Drew York and David Moss set off the fireworks - each with 3-run homeruns to lead the Thunder offense. David Moss picked up the first save of the season in the ninth inning by striking out 2 and finishing the game with a flyout to leftfield.

"Royals Cruise to 15-0 win over Cards"
Royals - The Kettering Royals took the field Sunday after a bit after their scheduled 4 PM start time due to the Indians/Thunder nail-biter that preceeded them. The Royals opponent on the day was the one of two new MVABL expansion teams for 2010, the Miami Valley Cardinals. The Royals showed up ready to rebound from the
Royals veteran Jason Holmberg took the hill for the Boys in Blue for his first Opening Day start, and the Cardinals countered with the 2010 MVABL number 1 draft pick, Aaron Thacker. In the first inning Holmberg had a part in the 1st 3 outs of the game recording 2 K's and a 1-3 putout. The Royals offense, together as a unit for the first time since their semi-final loss to the Slammers, was slow to get started. However they were able to plate the first run of the game in the bottom of the 1st as Brian Duffy was able to score after stealing third on a high throw from the Cardinals catcher. In the top of the 2nd Holmberg continued to warm-up. Looking to keep his pitch count low, he needed to face only 4 batters to close out the top of the 2nd and bring the Royals back to the plate. In the bottom of the 2nd, Tim Peffley got the offense started as he led off with a triple to the fence to bring Holmberg to the plate. Looking to help his own cause Holmberg laced a shot down the right field line to score Peffley from third. Royals rookie Matt Finster followed up with his first single of the year, and Duffy loaded the bases on his 2nd free pass on the day to bring Kevin Reynolds up. However, Reynolds showed up to the game with his target shirt on instead of his Royals jersey and was hit in the back for the 2nd time on the day to pickup the hard earned RBI. With the bases still loaded for the Boys in Blue, Chris Jergens stepped into the box. Jergens was able to plate 2 more runs with a opposite field double down the line. At the end of 2, the Royals held a 5-0 lead. In the top of the third, Holmberg again made quick work of the Cardinals order sitting them down 1-2-3. In the bottom half of the 3rd, the flood gates would open for the Royals as they were able to send 13 batters to the plate. During their run, they would score 8 runs with the help of 5 hits and 4 walks to end Thacker's day early. After the dust settled and the teams entered the top of the 4th, the Royals held a commanding 13-0 lead with the heart of the Cardinals order due up hoping to find an answer against Holmberg, but he wasn't giving away anything on the day as he again set the Cardinals down 1-2-3 for the second straight inning. Entering the bottom of the 4th, the Royals were poised to end the game early. Needing just 2 more runs to close out the games the bottom of the Royals order looked to get it done. Eric Jameson reached on a single and then took second on a passed ball. Royals rookie Adam Thomas recorded his first single of the year that was able to plate Jameson for the 14th run. Thomas was then able (just barely) to make the long haul and score from first off a double to the gap from Duffy for the 15th run. Reynolds then ended the home half of the 4th as he hit a nub shot back to the pitcher on the first ball he saw as he wanted to at least take 1 swing after being hit twice and walking on 4 straight in his first 3 at-bats. Needing just 3 more outs, Holmberg took the hill looking to finish what he'd started. The Cardinals first batter was able to reach first, but that was as far as he would get as Holmberg recorded 3 straight strikeouts for the 5 inning complete game victory.
On the day Holmberg faced 4 more than the minimal over 5 innings recording 9 strikeouts and only giving up 3 hits and 2 free passes. It was a good day for the Boys in Blue at the plate as they recorded 12 hits, with 4 Royals recording multiple hits. On a day where everyone contributed at the plate, it's hard to find one that stood out, but I think Jergens, Jameson, and Velasquez all deserve a mention each going 2-3 and tallying 8 RBIs and 3 runs scored between the 3 of them.

"Slammers Greet Redlegs with 4-1 Win"
Redlegs - The Redlegs lost their inaugural game against the South Dayton Slammers in a pitcher’s duel by a final tally of 4-1. Redleg hitters had no answer for Slammers starter Sean Casey as he struck out 17 hitters en route to a complete game victory.
Brad Clark got the nod as the opening day starter for the Redlegs and didn’t disappoint, giving up only 5 hits and striking out 10 in a complete game effort.
The Redlegs got on the board first in the top of the first inning. Jacob Robinson, Jared Bradley, and Brad Clark walked consecutively to load the bases putting Casey in an early jam. After a quick strikeout, Taylor Guntle drove in the Redlegs only run on a fielder’s choice groundball to short. The Slammers tied it up in the 2nd, pushing a run across on a bases loaded walk. Throwing errors led to Slammers runs in the 5th and 8th pushing their lead to 3-1. The Redlegs threatened again in the bottom half of the 8th after a two out single by Andrew Alcorn, followed by a double by Matt Mattice. Alcorn was subsequently gunned down at the plate to end the inning. The Slammers added an insurance run in the 9th on a two out RBI double ending the games scoring at 4-1. The Redlegs tried to make it interesting in the bottom of the 9th as Robinson led off with a single; Bradley then struck out but reached first as the pitch made its way to the backstop. With runners on the corners Casey ended the threat striking out 2 of the remaining 3 batters to end the game.

Slammers - The South Dayton Slammers were looking to keep their momentum going from the end of the 2009 season that saw them reach the final game of the postseason tournament. The Slammers traveled out to Preble Shawnee High School to take on the Camden Redlegs in their inaugural MVABL game. So early in the season one wouldn't expect a pitcher's duel, but that is what happened under sunny skies.
Brad Clark took the hill for the home team Redlegs as Sean Casey took the mound in his first game with the Slammers. The Slammers went 1-2-3 as the Redlegs came to bat. The first three batters all reached base on walks as Brandon Howard came up for the Redlegs. Casey was able to notch his first K of the game which was then followed up with a run-scoring fielder's choice for the early 1-0 Redlegs lead. The Slammers came up in the second and were able to tie the score. Slammers catcher Rick Anderson led off with a walk. He advanced to second and Casey was safe at first on an error. Third baseman Greg Marlow also reached base on an error so the Slammers had the bases loaded. The next two batters struck out which brought up center fielder Mike Ivers and he was able to coax a walk to score Anderson.
The game remained tied until the fifth. With two outs Anderson reached base on an error, which went out of the field of play and allowed him to go to second. He was courtesy runned for by Deane Grandfield, who eventually took off for third and was safe as the ball eluded the 3B and Grandfield came into score for the 2-1 lead. The Slammers added a run in the 8th for a 3-1 lead and scored an insurance run in the 9th on a Grandfield double scoring Kevin Ashworth from first. Casey went out in the 9th to hopefully record the complete game for the Slammers. Jacob Robinson led off with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch that allowed a swinging strikeout of Jared Bradley to reach first. Casey bore down and struck out the next two batters and the game ended on a fly ball to Ivers for the 4-1 Slammers victory. Casey was brilliant on the mound as he went 9 innings allowing 5 hits, one earned run, 4 walks while striking out 17. Clark pitched great also going all 9 with 4 hits allowed while striking out 10.
