The Redlegs and Slammers tangled for the last time of the 2017 regular season on Sunday and, fittingly, split the double dip matchup.

Game 1 saw a spectacular pitching performance from current MVABL wins leader Matt Redman.  Redman tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings against the Slammers earlier this season and stayed true to form in this one as he limited the Slammers high scoring offense to 2 hits and 1 unearned run while striking out 7 in the complete game effort.  He is now 5-1 on the season and owns a respectable 3.41 ERA.

The Slammers did hold a brief lead as they scored in the bottom of the 1st.  Troy Koze, who seems to be an emerging Redleg killer, singled with one out, stole 2nd, moved to 3rd on a passed ball and scored on an overthrow at 3rd.

The Redlegs then grabbed the lead in the top of the 3rd and did most of the damage with a 2-out rally.  Ryan Gross singled to start the inning and Jared Bradley reached on an error to put runners on the corners.  Matt Morrison then chopped a grounder to 3rd that Todd Barhorst was able to snag and deliver a perfect throw to the plate to nail Gross before scoring.  Jacob Robinson then hit into a fielder’s choice but was able to beat out the double play attempt which put runners on the corners with 2 outs.  Matt Mattice then singled in a run before Kyle Arend launched a 3-run bomb into the Bellbrook Jetstream to put the Redlegs up 4-1.  Joey Watson then walked before Mike Hartman blasted a 2 run shot of his own to extend the lead to 6-1.

Camden played a little add-on in the 6th, scoring 3 more times to round out the 9-1 final score.  Joey Watson and Mike Hartman each walked to start the inning and Adam Parks was able to reach on an error to load the bases.  Ryan Gross then hit a sacrifice fly to score a run and Jared Bradley added a 2-run 2-out single before the Slammers could retire the side.

The defense gave Redman a little support in the bottom half of the 6th as Matt Morrison made two nice rangy plays to his left to retire the first two batters of the inning.  Rick Anderson then laced a 2 out line drive to the right side but ultra-utility man Kyle Arend was able to make a diving snag at first base to end the frame.

Redman ended things quietly with a strike out and 2 pop fly outs to end the game.

The Slammers offense would not be held down for another game though as they pounded out 13 runs on 13 hits in game 2.  The Redlegs plated 7 of their own, but never held the lead in the nightcap.

After the Slammers put an early 3 runs on the board in the top of the 1st, Matt Mattice singled in the bottom half and was driven in by Joey Watson.  The Redlegs then tied it up at 3 in the 2nd.  After a run was allowed to score on a Slammers error, Jacob Robinson hit a sacrifice fly to get the tying run across.

The Slammers then dropped a 4 spot on the Redlegs in the 3rd, highlighted by a 2 run blast off the bat of Todd Barhorst.  Now trailing 7-3, the Redlegs chipped away in the bottom of the 3rd.  Joey Watson and Mike Hartman hit back-to-back doubles to get one run closer, cutting the lead to 7-4.

However, the Slammers took the run back in the 4th, 3 more in the 5th, followed by their final 2 runs in the 6th.  Trailing 13-4, the Redlegs did try to rally but would still come up well short.  In the 6th Adam Parks singled followed by a walk to Jared Bradley.  Jacob Robinson then singled in a run.  Next, Matt Mattice slashed a hard grounder to 1st that the Slammers were able to turn a nice double play on, forcing Mattice out at 1st and getting Bradley at 3rd.  Arend then doubled to score the final run of the frame.  Adam Parks notched his 2nd hit of the game when he singled in Nick Davis in the 7th.

The Mad River Machine took advantage of the Redlegs and Slammers beating up on each other and leapfrogged both teams to take first place after a double-header sweep of the Miami Valley Expos.  The Slammers and Redlegs remain 0.5 games back of the MVABL lead.

Next up for the Redlegs will be the Wright Knights in a 9-inning affair at Madison High School on July 2nd at 1:00PM.
