The final meeting between the Camden Redlegs and Kettering Royals of the 2017 regular season resulted in a split double header at Madison High School on Sunday.

Game 1 began with the Redlegs jumping out to an early lead in the top of the 1st.  Kyle Arend reached on a fielder’s choice.  With 2 outs and no one on, Kyle stole 2nd and then cruised around to score on an overthrow.  The Royals took the lead right back in the bottom half thanks to RBIs from Zane Vogelsang and Blake Kendig

It was all Redlegs from there though as they re-took the lead in the top of the 2nd and would not trail again in the game.  Adam Parks smoked a line drive out into right field to start the inning but it was tracked down by teammate Tim Sullivan as he was manning right field for the Royals as their 9th player was en route to the field.  James Robinson, James Gross, and Jared Bradley then all singled with one out to load the bases.  Matt Redman then grounded into a fielder’s choice to score Robinson, but was able to beat out the double play attempt.  Redman then stole 2nd, which allowed Adam Parks (running for the catcher Gross) to take home on the throw.  Matt Morrison then added an RBI single to finish up the scoring and leave the Redlegs with a 4-2 lead.

Kyle Arend singled followed by a double from Mike Hartman to start the 3rd inning.  Adam Parks then hit a sacrifice fly, which scored Arend and moved Hartman to third.  James Robinson then placed a ground ball to the right side of the infield to score Hartman.

After a quiet 4th, Matt Mattice started the top of the 5th with a single, stole 2nd and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike Hartman.

Trailing 7-2, the Royals scraped a run together in the top of the 6th to inch a bit closer as they pulled to within 4 runs.  However, The Redlegs answered again, this time with 3 runs in the top of the 7th.  With one out, Jacob Robinson singled and stole 2nd base.  Kyle Arend later knocked Robinson in with a 2 out single.  Mike Hartman then kept the inning alive with a base hit before Adam Parks tripled both runners home.

Meanwhile, Aaron Carmack had been dealing for the Redlegs defense.  Carmack went 6 innings and allowed only 3 runs while striking out 9 Royals.  He now stands at 2-1 with a shiny 3.27 ERA on the season.

Matt Mattice took over in the 7th and allowed only 1 Royals baserunner as he put the win in the books with a quiet finish.

Game 2 went the other way, with the Royals jumping out early by scoring 5 times in the top of the 1st inning.  Arend and Hartman got a run back in the bottom of the 1st as Arend tripled with 2 outs and Hartman followed it up with a double.  The 2nd inning went quietly before it looked like the Royals would play add on in the 3rd.  The Royals had the bags loaded with 2 outs when John Ramsey launched a deep fly ball into the left-center gap.  Redleg centerfield Jacob Robinson was able to track it down and make a diving snag just shy of the fence.

The Royals kept the pressure on though, scoring 7 times in the 4th and 5th innings.  The Redlegs offense kept pace, but simply left too many baserunners stranded to make a dent in the lead.  After leaving a runner on in the 1st, 2nd and leaving the bases loaded in the 3rd, the Redlegs did get a run in the 4th.  Adam Parks led off with a single and stole 2nd, followed by a single from James Robinson to put runners on the corners.  James Gross then notched an RBI base hit.  Royals starter Ryan Valentine then ended the threat by recording 3 straight outs to strand 3 more baserunners.

Matt Mattice launched a one out double off the top of the right field fence in the 5th and later scored off of a base hit by Mike Hartman.  Mike increased his hit streak to 16 games, the 3rd longest streak in Redlegs history.  Hartman was driven in by Adam Parks who then stole 2nd, moved to 3rd on a passed ball, and timed up a perfect steal at home as he took off just as the ball was being delivered back to the pitcher.

Zane Vogelsang belted his 4th home run of the season in the 7th to end the game’s scoring as the Royals finished up the 13-5 win to avoid the season sweep from the Redlegs.
