Schmitt Becomes Rangers All-Time Wins Leader
On a Sunday afternoon that involved a 6-hour delay and field relocation, the Rangers were able to knock off the Springfield Indians at AIA by a score of 8-4.
Shawn Schmitt picked up his third win of the year with a complete game victory, striking out three, on his way to recording his 34th career win as a Dayton Ranger. The win places Shawn in a tie for third all-time in the league in wins with 27, and topples former Ranger Rob Hoover's previous mark of 33.
The Indians took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Jeff Roberts grounder produced an errant throw, allowing Aaron Lawson to score. The Tribe made it 2-0 an inning later as Matt Buynak would score on a bases-loaded wild pitch. The Rangers took the lead in the top of the fourth. Ben Schooler led off with a single, but was caught stealing. Jonmarc Lippincott then singled. Robert Riley followed with a single. Ty Adams' groundball to second produced an errant throw allowing Lippincott to score. Jake Kingsolver then launched a two-run home run to give the Rangers a 3-2 lead.
In the 7th inning, Ty Adams singled with one out, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a double by Kingsolver. James Robinson then singled through the right side to plate Shawn Schmitt, who pinch ran for Kingsolver. The Indians inched closer in the bottom half of the inning when Joey Cherry doubled home Donnie Black to cut the lead to 5-3. In the 8th, Clint Wolf tripled with two outs, and scored on a single by Joe Staten to make it 6-3. Robert Riley led off the ninth with a double down the left field line. Ty Adams then deposited a hanging curveball to left field for a home run, that almost wasn't as Matt Buynak leaped over the fence to catch the ball, but falling over the fence, allowed it to be a home run. The Indians produced an unearned run in the ninth to make it a 8-4 final.
Shawn Schmitt pitched the complete game improving his record to 3-2 on the year. Schmitt scattered 9 hits and 3 walks and struck out 5.
Offensive highlights: Ty Adams 2-for-4 HR, 3 runs, 2RBI; Jake Kingsolver 3-for-3, double, HR, 3RBI; Robert Riley 2-for-4, double.
