BOX SCORE

EXPANDED STATS

The Redlegs (5-1) had their 5-game winning streak snapped on Sunday as the Mad River Machine narrowly edged them in a rare 1-0 victory.

As the score suggests, this game boasted some terrific pitching and defense.  Kevin Campbell tossed the first 5 frames for the Redlegs and allowed only 1 run on 7 hits while striking out 2 batters.  Michael Cookson then finished up the final 4 frames and fanned 9 more Machine hitters while allowing only 2 hits and no runs.

The Redlegs used some nice defensive work to kill a few early rallies by the Machine.  In the 2nd, Matt Morrison robbed a lead off hit by making a tough over the shoulder diving catch in short left field on a ball that looked like it might fall into no mans land.  The Redlegs later turned an inning ending 4-6-3 double play.  Campbell helped himself out in the 3rd.  After a leadoff single, the next batter lined one right back up the middle, but Campbell was able to snare it and quickly fire to first to complete a double play.

Paul Wilson doubled to start the 4th inning and moved to 3rd on a single by the next hitter.  With runners on the corners, the next hitter grounded a ball to 1st that James Robinson vacuumed up, quickly pounced on 1st and then fired a strike to 2nd to turn another double play.  Wilson scored however, and that turned out to be the only run in the entire game.

Miguel Perez continued to deal for the Machine and ended up turning in a complete game shutout and surrendered only two hits to the Redlegs, both to Jacob Robinson who singled and doubled.

The Redlegs will look to get back on track this Sunday as they will meet up for another installment of the Backyard Battle with the Dayton Rangers at 1:00 and 4:00 at Madison High School.
