Carey goes the distance in NO hitter against Royals

Boars Rookie Pitchers off to a hot start in 2019

Hardman Field, Piqua, Ohio  6/30/2019 DH.

The Boars continued traveling the scenic Ohio countryside, as they headed North to take on the Royals in a DH on Sunday. The Boars off to franchise best start in 2019 needing to keep pace with Slammers.

In Game #1 The Boars were sending Rookie Zac Carey to the Mound to battle the Royals tough lineup, but it would prove that the day would go Carey's way.

The visiting Boars in game #1 started the game with a K by Dylan Pletsch, Markus Hall walked and rookie Sean Johnson, was HBP his 4th on the season. Jimmy Herold's single moved the runners up and Sully Minners double brought in 2 runs, and moved Herold to 3rd. Minners 5th double on the season. Gary North singled and drove in Herold and Minner and the Boars had taken a 4 to 0 lead in the top of the 1st.

Carey took the mound staked to a 4 run lead which would as it turned out to be more than enough, He retired the Royals in order and the Boars were back up, Royals pitching was up to the task and sent the Boars down in order, and bringing the Royals back up to hit in the 2nd.

After a leadoff walk to Evan Koogler, who moved up to 2nd on a F/C to get the batter at 1st, Carey struck the next batter out, Koogler tried to take 3rd on a steal but was gunned down by Boars catcher Jimmy Herold, and a sweep tag by 3rd Baseman Brian Erbe, for the 3rd out.

In the top of the 3rd the Boars were back at it, with the top of the order back at the plate. Pletsch singled and stole 2nd, Hall was HBP, Johnson had an RBI hit driving in Pletsch. Herold and North both added RBI hits and the Boars lead increased to 8.

Carey resumed work striking out the first 2 batters and inducing a ground ball for the 3rd out. While the Boars top of the 4th, 5th , and 6th were uneventful, Carey kept on rolling batter after batter retiring Royals Hitters in each of the bottom half of the innings and recording 9 strikeouts.

In the top of the 7th Jacob Cooper hit a single, he later scored on Jacob Greve's RBI grounder, and the Boars had 9 to 0 lead. Carey in the final frame induced a ground out to short and another one to 2nd, and recorded his 10th K of the day to end it with Boars on top, Boars 9,and the Royals 0.

Zac Carey is the Boars Defensive Player of the Game , CG 7 Innings, 0- Hits, 0- Runs, 1 BB.

Sully Minner and Gary North shared the Boars Offensive Player of the Game. Both were 2 for 3 with 1 R/S, and had RBI's

 

Game #2 

The Boars were now the home team as they got set for game 2. The Royals and the Boars both were in a battle that saw the game tied 3 times by the Boars. The Boars sent another Rookie to the mound in Jacob Greve who was just returning from a 2 month absence,  and it prove to be a little shaky for the Rookie until the a veteran presence stepped in to lend a hand.

The visiting Royals wasted little time by striking first in the top of the 1st and putting 2 runs up right away by the first 2 hitters.  The Boars came to bat down but Hall and Johnson quickly evened the score, after RBI's from Dylan Pletsch and Jimmy Herold. evened the game at 2 all after 1 complete.

In the 2nd the Royals added a run after a HBP and a few ill timed walks allowed the Royals to again take the lead.  Boars 2nd inning leadoff batter Matt Seibert, found the gap and wound up striding into 3rd standing.  Connor Morris's RBI single drove in Seibert and the game was again tied at 3 all.

The Big inning for the Royals came in the 3rd. After a pop fly to 2nd that Markus Hall ranged for, a BB and a HBP and a hit single lifted Greve from the game. Veteran Pitcher P.J. Dobbins was put in to try to hold the damage minimal. But the Royals pulled off 4 runs, on 3 hits, to take the lead 7 to 3.

Johnson led off with a single and then promptly stole 2nd and 3rd. Jimmy Herold was walked but he then stole 2nd. Minner hit a foul ball that the 1st baseman ranged over and caught, but Johnson was standing on the bag when he caught it, with his back to the field Johnson went and the speedy runner was safe at home.Herold scored on North's single as the Boars were closing again. Matt Seibert hit a double which scored North, and Brian Erbe found a gap to the fence and was standing at 3rd with an RBI triple. The Boars had again tied the game at 7.

Dobbins had now settled in and hit his stride, keeping the Royals off the scoreboard in the 4th, from Jacob Coopers double and Zac Carey's triple and a Markus Hall sac fly.  In the 5th, Minner and North, singled and moved up on a wild pitch, then were driven home by Matt Seiberts single. While in the 6th, the Boars added their final 2 runs from a Connor Morris double and a Zac Carey double and Carey was brought home by a Jacob Greve's RBI single.   While the Boars had  added 2 in the 4th, 2 more in the 5th and a final 2 in the 6th to  lead 13 to 7.  

Dobbins started the 7th with a K, then allowed a sharp hit single but a flyout to center for the 2nd out. Then a sharply hit ball to 3rd was short hopped by 3rd baseman Rookie Brian Erbe who flipped the ball to Hall and the game was over with the Boars on top 13 to 7.
