EXPANDED STATS

The Redlegs made it 4 in a row after a come from behind victory over the Knights as they resumed play on a game postponed due to rain over a month ago.  Camden pulled out the victory by a final score of 8-7, holding off a late rally by the Knights in the process.

Way back on June 15th at Carlisle High School, Michael Cookson took the hill for the Redlegs and kept his club in the game over 4 innings of work.  He suffered through on and off rain and a few Redleg miscues but walked away having only given up one earned run and he fanned 7 Knights hitters.

The Redlegs trailed 4-0 and were able to tighten the contest to 4-3 just before the heavy rain began to fall.  Jesse Jones, Jacob Robinson, and James Robinson all worked walks to start the bottom of the 3rd.  Jones would then score on a passed ball, making an acrobat slide to avoid the tag and plate Camden’s first run.  Kyle Arend then hit a sacrifice fly which scored a run and moved another to 3rd.  Brandon Howard then played a little small ball and was able to score a run with a ground ball out to the right side of the infield.

Cookson then retired the side in order in the top of the 4th, and then the rains came and washed the game out.

Fast forward to July 20th and the two clubs met up again, this time at Madison High School, and got things rolling in the bottom of the 4th.  The Redlegs were silenced in the 4th and 5th innings, as 6 straight hitters were retired as the score held at 4-3.  Then a 5 run 6th inning propelled the Redlegs to a comfortable lead and would prove to be enough to eventually win the game.  It started off looking like an uneventful inning as a the Redlegs had a runner on 1st with two outs.  Matt Morrison then singled to put two runners aboard before Saige Micomonaco deposited a 3 run bomb into the trees beyond the fence in right center field.  Joey Watson and Jacob Robinson each then singled to extend the two out rally and were both driven in by consecutive hits by James Robinson and Kyle Arend

Now with an 8-4 lead, the story turned to Redleg veteran Kevin Campbell as he had taken over on the mound after the postponement.  Campbell turned in another terrific outing on the way to earning his 3rd win of the season and he eclipsed 500 career innings pitched in the process, joining only Shawn Schmitt (Dayton Rangers), Matt Spradlin (Springfield Indians), and Joe Becker (Dayton Rangers) as the only 4 pitchers in MVABL history to accomplish the feat.  Campbell’s only blemish on the afternoon was a solo shot by Jake Postel in the 8th inning.  He did give up a couple of unearned runs in the 9th before giving way to Aaron Carmack.  The inning started with a base runner reaching on an infield single.  The next batter hit a ball into the right center gap and tried to leg out the double, but Jacob Robinson was able to pick it off and make the throw to 2nd to erase the runner.  Campbell then recorded a strikeout, but back to back hits would prompt Camden to bring in the closer.  Carmack entered with two outs and runners on 2nd and 3rd in the 8-7 ballgame.  Camden then elected to walk the next hitter, Jake Postel, to load the bases.  Carmack then struck out the final batter to earn his 3rd career save.

Camden now stands at 10-5 and are on tap for an important matchup against the Kettering Royals on Sunday 7/21.  The Royals are currently in 4th place and sit only one game behind the 3rd place Redlegs.  The game will be at Howell Field at a 4:00 start time.
