EXPANDED STATS

The Redlegs won an important matchup with the Royals on Sunday, helping to solidify their 3rd position in the MVABL standings.  The Royals went into the game trailing the Redlegs by one game for 3rd place.

The visiting Redlegs scored early and often in this one, jumping out to a 7-1 lead after just two innings.  In the 1st, Matt Morrison started the game with a single and swiped 2nd base.  After moving to 3rd on a groundout, he scored on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Arend.

Camden then put 6 more on the board in the 2nd.  Mike Hartman and Joey Watson singled consecutively to begin the inning which put runners on the corners and Watson quickly stole 2nd base, one of 3 bases he robbed in the contest.  Matt Mattice then knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly.  Adam Parks then singled to again put runners on the corners, but Parks quickly took 2nd to again put both runners in scoring position.  Matt Morrison then walked, which set up a bases clearing triple by Jacob Robinson.  Kyle Arend then smoked a double to score Robinson.

A scary moment for the Redlegs then occurred in the bottom of the 2nd.  After a lead off Royal single, the next batter hit a slow roller to 3rd base that sent gold glove third baseman Mike Hartman charging.  As he was in the process of bare handing it, Mike went down clutching his knee.  The injury appears to be serious and we believe that Mike’s season is likely over, but we hope to see him back at the hot corner in 2020.

Camden regrouped quickly.  The next batter hit a grounder to James Robinson at 2nd base who was able to start a 4-6-3 double play.  The next batter hit a hard grounder to the right side, but Joey Watson made a cat like sliding grab to stop it and popped up and beat the runner in a footrace to 1st to end the inning.

After leaving the bases loaded in the 3rd, the Redlegs got right back at it in the 4th.  Jacob Robinson started the inning with a single and moved to 3rd on a double by Kyle Arend that clanged off the top of the left field fence.  A single by Saige Micomonaco then scored goth runs.  Kevin Campbell then walked before Joey Watson hit a run scoring single.  James Robinson walked, followed by a sacrifice fly by Adam Parks.  Matt Morrison then singled, followed by a walk to Jacob Robinson as the Redlegs successfully batted around.  Kyle Arend then hit his 2nd double of the inning, clearing the bases while increasing his RBI total to 5 on the day.  Saige Micomonaco then doubled to score Arend which finished off the inning’s scoring.

On the other side of the ball, Redlegs starter Michael Cookson was turning in quite the game of his own against his former club.  The game ended up going 4 ½ innings due to an approaching storm, but both clubs agreed to call it final as the score stood at 15-2.  Cookson therefore turned in the complete game, tossing all 4 innings while striking out 7 Royals hitters and allowing only 2 runs.

Now winners of 5 straight games, Camden will put their streak on the line against the Mad River Machine on Sunday 7/28/19 at Madison High School in a double header beginning at 1:00pm.  The Machine bested the Redlegs back on June 2nd by a score of 1-0.
