GAME 2 BOX SCORE

The Redlegs met up with the Machine on Sunday 7/28/19 for a double dip out at Madison High School and battled in out in two competitive games.  Camden took game 1 by a final tally of 10-5 and rallied in the top of the 7th to tie the game in the nightcap, but the Machine were able to pull out the win as the game ended with a questionable call.

Kevin Campbell took the hill for Camden in game 1 and put together another solid outing to earn his 3rd consecutive victory and 4th of the season.  In fact, his last loss came against the Machine back on June 2nd, when the Redlegs couldn’t muster a score in a 1-0 defeat.  That wouldn’t trouble the Redlegs this time though, as Campbell got plenty of run support from his club.  Campbell tossed five innings and gave up 3 runs, none of which were earned.  He lowered his season ERA to a sparkling 1.52 on the afternoon.

Campbell got a little defensive help in each of the 2nd and 3rd frames.  In the 2nd, second baseman Brad Malott showed some great range as he was able to make a pretty over the shoulder sliding catch in short center field.  The play came with two outs and a runner on second which directly prevented a run from scoring.  In the 3rd the leadoff batter smashed a hard line drive down the 3rd base line that Nick Davis was able to pluck out of the air while ranging to his right.

After two quiet innings from both clubs, Camden struck first in the bottom of the 3rd.  Adam Parks singled, moved to 2nd on a groundout, and then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Matt MorrisonJacob Robinson then laced an RBI single before Saige Micomonaco hit a towering moon shot that landed somewhere well beyond the left field fence at Madison High School.

Adam Parks then did his part defensively as he prevented a leadoff runner in the top of the 4th.  The lead off man ripped what looked like would end being a double down the left field line.  Parks was able to cut it off quickly and deliver a perfect two-hopper to 2nd base in plenty of time for Malott to get a glove on the head first sliding baserunner.

The Redlegs then picked up three more runs in the 4th.  James Robinson reached on a fielding error to begin the inning.  Brad Malott and Matt Mattice later singled to load the bases with one out.  Tyler Henry then brought two runs home with a single before Matt Morrison added another with a single of his own.

The Machine finally broke through in the 5th and scored 3 times with the help of a Redleg error that extended the inning.

Leading 6-3, Camden then put together their 3rd consecutive 3-run inning in the bottom of the 5th.  Nick Davis started things off with a double and later Matt Mattice singled to put two runners aboard.  Brad Malott then added a run scoring base hit before Adam Parks got a run in with a little small ball by hitting a grounder over to the right side of the infield.  Malott would later score on a fielding error.

Isaac Marquez took over for Campbell in the 6th and the Machine greeted him with 3 consecutive hits and a sacrifice fly that yielded two runs.  Marquez then settled in and induced a lazy pop fly before recording a strikeout to end the inning.

The Redlegs added one final run in the 6th to extend their lead to 10-5, which would eventually serve as the final tally.  Jacob Robinson singled to start the inning and eventually scored on a two out base knock by James Robinson

Marquez then helped himself out to start the top of the 7th as the first hitter tried to bunt his way on.  Marquez pounced on it near the 3rd base line and delivered a strike to 1st to eliminate any chance of a leadoff base runner.  After the next batter singled, Marquez again induced a pop fly to right field before striking out the final batter of the game.

Game two turned out to be a much tighter contest and would eventually end in a walk off victory for the Machine.

Tyler Henry made his 2019 debut on the mound and tossed the first four innings for Camden, he racked up 7 strike outs along the way and surrendered just 3 earned runs.

Unfortunately for Henry, the Redlegs were stifled by Kevin Reynolds over the first four innings but finally broke through in the 5th.  James Robinson singled to start the inning and moved to third when Matt Mattice stroked a double.  Robinson then scored on a grounder to the right side by Brad Malott before Adam Parks brought another run home with a single.

Things were looking bleak as the score held firm at 4-2 going into the 7th frame.  The Redlegs were able to load the bases with two outs, making for a very tense situation as they needed two runs to keep the game alive.  It looked like the game was over as the next hitter struck out, but the ball kicked away from the catcher and all the runners were able to move up a base, bringing the score to 4-3.  During the next at bat, the Machine’s hurler balked, which allowed the tying run to score.

Michael Cookson was putting up zeros in relief, doing his absolute best to keep his club in the game but he found himself in some trouble in the bottom of the 7th.  The Machine were able to load the bases with two-outs, creating a very similar situation that they were just in just a half inning before.  Cookson fell behind 3-0, one ore ball would end the game on an RBI walk.  He delivered two picture perfect pitches on his next two attempts, but the 3-1 pitch was ruled a ball which ended the game in a Camden defeat.

The Redlegs next action will be Sunday, August 4th in a double header against the Wright Knights at 10:00am and 1:00pm at Madison High School.
