The offensive and defensive woes continue as the Rangers drop a 14-4 decision to the Camden Redlegs at Gastineau Field. The Rangers staved off potentially getting run-ruled for the first time in the Backyard Battle series, of which they still lead 24-20. The team produced the same number of hits (5) as errors, but the misfortunes coupled with a number of slow infield dribblers by their opponent was too much to overcome.
The game had the making of its usual competitive nature early on. In the top of the first, Rangers starter Brandon Saylor gave up a one-out double to Brad Malott and a single to Kyle Arend. After a strikeout, a couple of passed balls allowed the runners to score. But Saylor got his second strikeout to end the inning, and worked through a scoreless frame in the second.
In the bottom of the second, Eric Becker singled and scored later on a single from Chris Ridl to cut the Redlegs lead to 2-1. In the top of the third, the Redlegs got the run back as pitcher Jesse Jones singled home Malott. The Redlegs threatened again in the fourth as they put a runner on third, but Saylor struck out Eric Jameson and Jacob Robinson before the Rangers went to the bullpen. Lefty Ryan Qvick entered a lefty-lefty matchup against Malott who already had two hits. Malott was able to work a walk before Qvick got a ground out to end the threat.
The error bug bit the Rangers in the fifth as the Redlegs batted around to score 9 unearned runs. Two fielding errors, a throwing error and a couple passed balls prolonged an inning that put the game quite out of hand.
Ridl picked up his second RBI knock in the bottom of the seventh, scoring Becker again to make it a 12-2 ballgame. The Redlegs tried for the run-rule in the top of the 8th as Brandon Howard turned on a Hunter Kraynak fastball and connected a deep 2-run home run to left field. The former Rangers infielder moved past Joe Staten for 4th place all by himself on the all-time MVABL HR list.
The Rangers stayed out of the run-rule in the bottom of the 8th, as Nick Gilmore was hit by a pitch and moved all the way homeward on 3 wild pitches. Cooper Nolte pretty much did the same in the bottom of the ninth accounting for the final run of the game.
Kenny Owens worked a scoreless 9th inning.
Offensive highlights: Chris Ridl 2-for-3, 2RBI; Eric Becker 1-for-3, 2 runs, walk
Historical Notes: The Rangers are 4 runs away from 5000 MVABL runs scored. The Rangers need 36 more runs to reach 6000 franchise runs. The Rangers need 75 more hits to reach 8000 franchise hits. The Rangers still lead the Backyard Battle series 24-20.
