Redlegs Report

Game 1

Box Score

The 2016 MVABL Championship series would feature two teams making their first ever trip to the finals, the Camden Redlegs and the Mad River Machine.  The Redlegs earned their first #1 seed which granted them a 1st round forfeit victory versus the Stars before a two game sweep of a hot hitting Wright Knights squad.  The Machine, who entered as the 4 seed, knocked off two perennial powerhouses by defeating the Dayton Rangers in the opening round and the 2 seed South Dayton Slammers in the semi-finals.  They scored a whopping 42 runs over their 5 playoff games making their way to the finale.

At the conclusion of the regular season, the Redlegs ranked 2nd in the league with 223 runs scored while the Machine ranked 3rd at 205 runs scored.  With both offenses capable of putting up big numbers, the series was shaping up to be a high scoring affair.  Somebody must have forgotten to tell game 1 starters Kevin Campbell and Matt Clark about those numbers though as they locked horns early on and found themselves in the middle of a pitcher’s duel as they fought to keep their respective teams in the game.  Campbell, having a knack for shutting down potent offenses throughout his career, would live up to his reputation.

The Machine drew first blood in the top of the 1st when Cameron Calhoun dropped a perfect bunt single down the 3rd base line, stole 2nd, and scored on a ground out.  Campbell then buckled down and struck the next two batters out ending the inning.  The Machine added on in the 2nd when Brennan Sokowoski singled and stole 2nd to start the inning and scored on a single by Aaron Maggard

The Redlegs then finally broke through against Clark and put a run on the board, bringing the deficit to 2-1.  Kyle Arend singled with one out and stole 2nd and was promptly plated on a base hit by Joey Watson

Matt Clark helped himself out in the top of the 4th by driving in a run to extend the Machine advantage to 3-1.  In the 4th Paul Wilson got on base, swiped a bag and was driven in by Sokowoski to make it a 4-1 game.

The Redlegs continued to threaten but Clark would constantly shut down any potential rallies as he stranded 9 Redleg base runners in the game.

Kyle Arend was able to put another dent in the Machine lead in the 6th.  Matt Mattice singled with 2 outs, Jacob Robinson worked a walk, and Arend drove Mattice home with a base hit.  Clark again settled in and recorded a punch out to escape the jam.

Campbell went back out in the top of the 7th and recorded a quick strikeout before Paul Wilson doubled, but then came the rain.  The field quickly became unplayable and officials were forced to call the game complete, giving the Machine a 4-2 win in game 1.

Game 2 was pushed back to Sunday at a 1:00 start time.  The Redlegs, with their back against the wall, would need to win 2 straight in order to take the Championship.

Game 2

Box Score

In dire need of a win, the Redlegs turned to Eric Williams to try and shut down the Machine offense.  Williams delivered and then some.  He proceeded to toss a complete game while allowing only 5 hits, 1 earned run, and 7 punch outs en route to his 2nd post season victory.  This brought his post season ERA down to a sparkling 1.38 over 13 innings pitched as he added 10 strike outs, 2 wins, and only 2 earned runs.

The offense also treated Williams much better than they did Campbell the day before.  Not only did the Redlegs strike first, they never trailed in the entire ball game.  Things weren’t comfortable early though as the Redlegs would score 5 of their 9 runs in the 8th and 9th innings as they had trouble solving Paul Wilson, a 2nd team all MVABL pitcher in 2016.

Jacob Robinson reached on an error to start the game in the top of the 1st, he then stole 2nd, moved to 3rd on a single by Brandon Howard, and then scored on a wild pitch.  They added another in the top of the 4th when Matt Morrison singled with 2 outs, stole 2nd, and scored on a base hit by Matt Mattice.

The Machine then looked like they might get something going in the bottom half of the 4th.  Game 1 Machine hero Matt Clark started the inning off with a single.  Patrick Beyerle then laced a hard grounder down the 3rd base line but Redlegs third baseman Mike Hartman was able to making a diving play to knock it down.  He was then able to collect himself and the ball and fire a strike to 1st to get Beyerle in the nick of time.  Clark was able to move up to 3rd on the play, but Williams retired the next two batters quietly to end the threat.

The Redlegs continued to keep the pressure on by adding runs in the 5th and 6th.  Mike Hartman played a little small ball by driving in a run with a ground ball out to second base.  Matt Morrison then manufactured a run in the 6th when he led off with a single, stole 2nd, and moved to 3rd on a single by Matt Mattice.  With runners on 1st and 3rd, Mattice attempted the steal of 2nd but was gunned down by Machine backstop George Lesher.  Morrison alertly took home on the throw down to give the Redlegs the 4-0 advantage.

Lesher then scored the lone run for the Machine when he walked to start the bottom of the 7th and was later driven in by Michael Taylor

The Redlegs then put the game away off of the Machine bullpen.  In the Top of the 8th Mattice and Jared Bradley each walked with one out and Jacob Robinson plated Mattice with a base hit.  Kyle Arend was then walked and Joey Watson was plunked by a pitch which brought home another run.  Brandon Howard then hit a sacrifice fly to deep center to bring in the final run of the inning.

The Redlegs brought two more home in the top of the 9th.  James Robinson was hit by a pitch to start the inning, Matt Mattice singled, and Jacob Robinson was hit by a pitch to load up the bases.  Kyle Arend was then plunked which brought a run home and another run would score on a wild pitch.

Williams then finished things off on a strong note, retiring the Machine in the bottom of the 9th with a quiet 1-2-3 inning.

Game 3

Box Score

The finale of the MVABL playoffs turned out to be an intense and exciting game.  Each team sent out their game 1 starting pitchers to try and duplicate their strong outings from the day before.  While the Redlegs continued to try and figure out Matt Clark, the Machine were ready to pounce on the veteran ace of the Redlegs.

The Machine blasted out of the gate in the top of the 1st inning.  Cameron Calhoun led the game off with a triple and promptly scored on a single by Brenen Sokowoski.  Paul Wilson later doubled and would score when Michael Taylor lined a 2 out bomb over the left field fence.

Jacob Robinson then started the bottom half of the inning with a line drive double that got over the head of the left fielder.  Joey Watson then singled, but as Clark had done so many times the day before, he was able to strand the runners in scoring position.

Campbell worked quickly turning in a 1-2-3 top of the 2nd before the Redleg offense threatened again.  James Robinson led off with a single and moved to 2nd on a beautiful sacrifice bunt by Matt Morrison.  Clark buckled down and retired two straight batters with a ground out to 2nd and short stop.

Matt Clark continued to kill the Redlegs by recording a one out base hit and eventually scored on a single by Nicholas Montoya

The Redlegs finally got on the board in the bottom of the 3rd.  Jacob Robinson walked to start the inning, swiped 2nd base, moved to 3rd on a single by Joey Watson, and scored on a wild pitch.

But the Machine offense would not be silenced.  They scored 2 more in the top of the 4th to push their advantage to 7-1.  Aaron Maggard led the inning off with a double and scored when Tyler Bundy singled.  George Lesher was then hit by a pitch.  Cameron Calhoun then grounded into a fielder’s choice at 2nd base but a run scored on the play.  Sokowoski then worked a walk to load the bases which brought Matt Clark to the plate.  Clark lined a hot shot to Mike Hartman at 3rd, but he was able to handle it and throw a perfect ball to home plate to get the runner before scoring.  Campbell then was able to induce an infield popup to strand the runners and end the inning.

Matt Redman then took over on the hill for the Redlegs in top of the 5th.  Trailing 7-1, the Redlegs needed Redman to hold the Machine if they had any hopes of making a comeback. Redman got off to a good start, turning in a scoreless 5th and stranded runners at 2nd and 3rd when he ended the inning with a strikeout.

The Redlegs chipped away at the lead in the bottom of the 5th.  Jared Bradley led the inning off with a single and ended up scoring on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Howard.

Redman got a little help from center fielder Jacob Robinson in the top of the 6th.  Brenen Sokowoski smoked a hard line drive into center field that looked like it would be a lead off base hit, but Robinson was able to lay out and make a diving snag to take away the hit.  Matt Clark then doubled, but Redman got a ground out and fly out to end the inning unscathed.

Paul Wilson entered again for the Machine in the bottom of the 6th and held the Redlegs scoreless.  Redman matched with a 1-2-3 top of the 7th.

The Redlegs then got to Wilson in the bottom of the 7th, they sent 9 men to the plate and scored 3 runs to bring the game back to 7-5.  Jacob Robinson walked with one out, Arend singled and Brandon Howard walked to load the bases.  Mike Hartman then singled in a run before James Robinson and Matt Morrison each worked walks to bring in runs.

Redman continued pitching well, holding the Machine scoreless in the top of the 8th recording another strike out.

Wilson matched with a 1-2-3 bottom of the 8th.

Redman then walked Michael Taylor to start the top of the 9th before recording an out via a fly ball to center field.  Tyler Bundy then lined a scorched line drive toward second base.  Brandon Howard made a miraculous jumping snag to take away the hit and fired a strike to 1st base to double up the runner and send the Redlegs back to the plate with one last shot at a comeback.

Wilson retired the first batter he faced and then walked Brandon Howard.  Howard was then forced out at 2nd on a ground ball to short stop.  With 2 outs and one runner on, the Redlegs had no more room for error.  James Robinson delivered a single to keep the game alive.  Matt Morrison was then hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Matt Mattice then worked a walk which brought the game within one run at 7-6.  Jared Bradley then walked to the plate in what was undoubtedly the most pressure packed at bat of the game.  Bases loaded, two outs, bottom of the 9th, trailing by one run.  Bradley worked a walk to bring in the tying run.  Jacob Robinson then stepped to the plate.  The Machine elected to turn to Cameron Calhoun to take over on the mound and try to save the game for the Machine.  On a 2-2 count, Calhoun delivered a fast ball that Robinson drove into left center field to bring the winning run to the plate and clinch the Redlegs first MVABL championship.

Matt Redman earned the win with his outstanding effort, allowing no runs over 5 frames, 2 hits, and 2 strikeouts.
