Redlegs Sweep Boars, Move onto Semi-Final

GAME 1 BOX SCORE

EXPANDED STATS

The first round of the 2018 MVABL playoffs would make for an interesting draw for the Redlegs, as they needed to sweep the Wild Boars in the final double header of the season to lock up the 3rd seed in the tournament.  The bad news is that the Boars had the Redlegs number in 2018, winning both of their prior matchups earlier in the season.  The Redlegs were finally able to best the boars in their final matchup, but they lost the first game of the double header which dropped the Redlegs to the 4th seed and a 1-3 record versus the boars in the regular season.  This of course meant that the Redlegs would be matched up with the 5th seed Boars once again, this time with the season on the line.

Redlegs ace Aaron Carmack went to work against the Boars’ Travis Knight and it looked like a pitcher’s duel early on as both teams threatened but neither could get on the scoreboard in the first two frames.  The scoreless tie was broken by the Boars in the top of the 3rd as they pushed 3 runs across before Carmack was able to wiggle out of the bases loaded jam with a pop out to first base.  Carmack would eventually strand 12 Wild Boar baserunners on the day.

The Redlegs fought back in the bottom of the 4th when Joey Watson blasted a 2-run shot over the left field fence, driving in Nick Davis who singled earlier in the inning.  The momentum carried over into the 5th inning, leading to 3 more Redleg runs.  Jacob Robinson walked with one out, followed by a single from Nick Davis and an RBI base hit by Kyle Arend.  Another strikeout looked like it might kill the rally, but Joey Watson, Brandon Howard, and James Robinson all walked consecutively to bring two more runs home.  Howard and Robinson recorded an RBI each with their bases loaded free passes.

Trailing 5-3, the Boars had no plans of going away quietly as Travis Knight helped himself out with an RBI base hit to inch the Boars closer at 5-4.

The Redlegs then scored what would turn out to be a very important insurance run in the bottom half of the 6th.  Nick Davis reached on a fielder’s choice, moved to 2nd on a passed ball, and was driven in by Kyle Arend.

After retiring the first batter in the top of the 7th, a walk, a botched double play, and a sacrifice fly led to a Boars run with the tying run at 3rd base.  Carmack rose to the occasion and punched out the final batter in the pressure packed at bat, ending the threat and giving the Redlegs a very important game 1 victory.

GAME 2 BOX SCORE

Game two turned out to be much less stressful as the Redlegs controlled throughout and cruised to a 12-5 victory.

Luke Campbell got the nod and picked a great time to turn in his best performance of his rookie campaign.  Luke tossed the first 3 1/3 innings and gave up 2 earned runs, 5 hits, and added 2 strikeouts.

The Redlegs got to work in the top of the 1st inning.  Jacob Robinson singled to start the game, followed by a walk to Nick Davis, and a base hit by Kyle Arend.  Back-to-Back strikeouts followed which put a damper on the rally, but Brandon Howard was plunked by a pitch to bring home the game’s first run.

Camden put four more runs on the board in the 2nd highlighted by a sacrifice fly by Nick Davis, an RBI by Mike Hartman, and a 2-run single by Joey Watson.

Meanwhile, Luke was cruising.  He allowed only two baserunners through the first 3 frames and one reached on an error.

The 4th inning saw the Redlegs score 6 more times.  Jacob Robinson singled and stole 2nd to start the inning, Nick Davis then singled before Kyle Arend brought both runners home with a triple.  Mike Hartman then singled in a run, followed by a hit by Joey Watson.  Brandon Howard was hit by another pitch to load the bases.  Ryan Gross then doubled home two runs before Zhelun Wang notched his first RBI as a Redleg with a sacrifice fly.

The Boars finally got to Campbell in the bottom of the 4th highlighted by a leadoff bomb by Dylan Pletsch.  A couple of Redleg miscues led to a Boar rally and three more runs came around to score.  Kevin Campbell was brought on in relief and was able to get out of the jam without further damage.

The Redlegs scored their 12th run in the 6th when Kyle Arend singled and stole 2nd and eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Joey Watson.

The Boars added one more in the bottom half of the 5th to make the score 12-5, but that’s when the Redlegs put things away for good with a 5 run top of the 6th.  Ryan Gross started the rally by belting a one-out double to straight-away center field.  Zhelun Wang then hit a sharp line drive into left field for his first hit as a Redleg, followed by an RBI single by Jacob Robinson.  After a flyout for the 2nd out, Kyle Arend singled in a run and Mike Hartman doubled home two more.  Joey Watson finished off the scoring with an RBI single.

Mother nature decided that was the time to call it quits, as lightning in the area forced the game to be called.  The final score reverted to the end of the 5th inning, giving the Redlegs the 12-5 victory.

The Redlegs will next take on the Kettering Royals in the semi-finals on Saturday 9/15 at Wright State’s Nischwitz Stadium at 4:00 and 7:00.
